Hi Guys,

once again, I have a question about Skyrim, I just looked at the post on "R.I.P Companions"
On The first Companions quest, where you have to kill a wizard (no names mentioned) I had Lydia with me, we battled our way through the dungeon, and came to the boss, Lydia immediately ran up, ate several Lightning bolts and a small dagger, and fell to her knees, after i had buried my sword in his stomach, she got up, like nothing had happened. people are saying companions can die...can they???

UPDATE...i'm not sure were ive left her (hopefully somewhere were she can get a drink...

They apparently can.. But.. Erf, mine don't die since I don't take em along.

Edit: I suppose that sometimes they are questline important and just fall to their knee's all tired n stuff. Like with that first quest for the Companions.

From what I did with the companions there are scripted companions who die. I don't think they will die on missions unless they are supposed to.

If anything hits them while they are recovering, when they are taking a knee, then they will permanently die.

Same as above, if they are about to die, enemies will stop attacking, but if you are near them, an enemy may miss and hit them, then they're dead. Or you can kill them yourself, friend set lydia on fire.

It wouldn't be such a problem if someone had just either given them AI styles that you could choose from (e.g. passive, stealth, berserker) or just made them imitate the player (e.g. run away when the player does, don't attack until the player is fully detected).

The thieves' guild quests were damaged by the fact that the NPCs have a level of stupid beyond human comprehension.

Well more like its annoying when a escort char dies and you fail the quest. If you remember in oblivion that fight towards the end of the story where you had to fight alot of Daedra and if Martin died it was game over. The same scenario in Skyrim would look like this (it doesnt exist but if it did): Martin gets attacked by a bunch of monsters Martin goes down on his knees and the monsters turn towards whoever else is around instead of delivering a killing blow wich would lead to quest fail and in the case of a main story quest: game over.

The NPC can still die if they take a hit while your near them like some1 pointed out. But seriously i dont see the point of having a escort in the first place since they are annoying and tend to get in the way of all the fun. I remember for example in a tomb somewhere i had to help a dude out to kill a necromancer with the optional quest of having him survive the damn thing. We got to the last room with the necromancer with no problem and then the room starts filling up with those damnable zombies. They got him down in seconds and then turned on me but they never actually killed him and he got up again. This was to me: WTF just happened and how would this fight be possible if the char actually could die instead of going down on the knee. It would be impossible

I'm not sure if mine died, or if she's just lost in the mountains somewhere . . .

It's cool, I didn't understand anything because of your grammar anyway.

OT: My Livia died several times, but like others said, it was in situations where there were several enemies, or big mobs (giants, dragons, ...), so she might've been an AoE casualty.

I'm not so much annoyed by the fact that companions can die than by the fact that their vulnerability makes it possible for someone like me - who regularly gets stuck in what I'd call Enemy Tunnel Vision - to accidentally kill a follower.

I was headed for Windhelm and was accosted by a bunch of bandits near a bridge. The Blades lady and myself made short work of the brigands, but then I saw Lydia run up to me with her weapon drawn, and it just didn't register to me that it was her until it was too late.

Me: "Oh... I am a derp."
Blades lady: "No argument there, Dorkvahkiin."

Yeah, usually Lydia falls to her knees and then gets up after a while.
But she has died on two occasions (although I did reload my last save both times because I don't want her dead for now). She was killed by some massive fire ball explosion spell that I let off inside a shop once, and I also witnessed her flying several hundred feet into the air after being hit by a giant's club, something I don't believe she survived (but I never actually found her body that time).

Lydia has never died for me, even after taking dragonbreath to the face and various other AOE spells that were fired by me (and the mages I led the dragon towards). Strange.

This. I experienced it firsthand when I accidentally fireballed a recovering J'zargo.

J.Z., we hardly knew ye. Sorry man.
