So, as a stereotypical 'games-are-art', 'plot-beats-gameplay', retro-PC-gaming ****** (just beating everyone else to the insults), I grew up on games with interesting, sympathetic characters. The old PC adventure games (e.g. Grim Fandango, Sam & Max, Monkey Island, Discworld, etc.), while not exactly on the cutting edge of interactive gameplay, did feature three things that have declined in the modern gaming industry: well written plots, humorous and witty dialogue, and main characters that players can actually sympathize with. They had actual human flaws and limitations, and were able to portray emotions other than macho, devil-may-care, aloofness. Now, I know there have been a few modern video games that have had good leading men and women (e.g. Gordon Freeman from Half-Life), the most have struck me as rather bland. If anyone can tell me about some recent releases with realistic, well-rounded main characters, that'd be great.

Gah. I was going to say the TF2 characters. They're the best characterised onces in a random desthmatch game, ever. Plus, it's like a little story being added up which makes it more interesting.

Gman was pretty compelling.

It may sound stupid considering they only appear as radio chatter or in cutscenes, but I really liked the characters from Ace Combat 5. They all had likable personalities, but they didn't seem to be overly forced (like Nathan Drake is). Give that a shot.

Nah, personally I dont think thats true, I think a lot of modern video games are just like you described your older ones.

Especially because many, many games now let you make your own character, than they are as interesting as your imagination makes them.

Gordon Freeman as a good character? Personally I forgot who I was half the time in Half..life. If it wasnt for the box art, I doubt freeman would even be recognised from the game

Ahem, explain to me how Gordon Freeman is NOT bland!? He's mute and you practically never see his face. How is he supposed to be an interesting character?

Beat me to it. You cited a silent protagonist as a compelling character? How does that work out exactly? Link has more character than him, as he actually has visual motive and screen time. Gordon acts as a yes-man for whoever passes by him, with the exception of the Combine and aliens.

Maybe you could try Dragon Age on the PC.
Your party members feel like actual people and it is fun to just sit at the camp-fire with them and talk.
There's not a single character that I find bland, or that I don't end up caring for towards the end.
There's also plenty of humour and wit in the dialogues. Especially Alistair will crack you up.

Well, Captain Shepard was much more, as you say it, "compelling" than Gordon Freeman (a blank slate) or any stereotypical machos.
