Hey guys, I'm a top platinum player is Starcraft 2, and it was (as of last month) my first RTS multiplayer experience. I remember watching my friend playing Warcraft 3 and wondering how the hell you could enjoy playing a game like this. However, I'm having an amazing amount of fun, discovering all of its intricacies would take me a lifetime, and executing tactics flawlessly is very satisfying. Watching competitive matches has also become very entertaining, and I regularly watch Day9's superb dailys (he discusses the game in more detail, and he is engrossing, to say the least).

I am as of now dipping my toes into COH multiplayer, and, as I have no idea what I'm doing and there is nowhere near the community for it as there is for SC2. Having said that, the game is great and very fun.

I was just wondering, as RTS games are not very popular (in the Western world, and when compared to genres such as shooters and RPGs), how many of you play them online? What game, how good are you etc.

I play DOW and it's expansions online. I'm not that great, although I do enjoy sharing the challenge with my friends.
For some reason I never got into Civ online.

I've started up Starcraft II. Not very good...

I tried to play Dawn of War Multiplayer (Dark Crusade and SoulStorm) but it never worked...
I have Company of Heroes but same story...

So you can see I have quite a background of RTSs and in general I can kick ass. Starcraft 2? I'll have to ease my way in. I'm practice league...

Hey, if you want help, I'm happy to train you up in the basics of Starcraft over the weekend (most of my friends are going on an exchange so I have nothing to do). It only really opens up once you get good.

I'm addicted to DoW (not that sequel tripe, might as well be playing an overhead party game) and I am absolutely terrible at it. I'm decent enough at upgrading and managing units. It's when I have to multitask that I absolutely fall apart. Sometimes it all feels like a giant clusterfuck without any real strategy beyond sending in masses of light infantry units while my opponent smashes them with a well-dressed band of armed, 400 pound gorillas.

Whatever, just wash your hands.
I love rts games, specifically anything relic makes and a few others but I cant really do them online, Im actually pretty good at them but losing makes me rage like nothing else, in an fps game even on a losing team Ill usually be pretty high on the score list but the way you can just get totally blocked in an rts makes me rage like almost nothing else

I used to play RTS games religously, although that was back in the days of SC2 or Age of Kings. Had a brief period of Age of Empires 3, but never got into it too much. I generally play a lot of LAN with friends (which is a blast), but have never really enjoyed playing competitively online - I find it to be a hell of a lot more stressful than playing an FPS, largely because if I fail then my failure is compared intimately with whoever I was playing against. I like to play to relax, and online RTSs have always hit me with too much play to win.

The only RTS I play is StarCraft 2 (started playing StarCraft 1 half a year ago), and I'm not particularly swell at it. Currently in Silver 1v1, though I could get into Gold if I actually played more. I do like watching commentators and and higher-level competitive play, though.

I placed into platinum league in sc2 but I haven't played much lately. I used to play sc1 religiously. I dabbled in wc3 but I was terrible at it. Currently I've been playing civilization type games like rise of nations and medieval 2: total war (and civ but that's not an rts).

Nah it's alright. Besides, I already enjoy the game whether or not I'm good at it.

I am finding this hard to believe, this is your first RTS game, the game itself has only been out a short time and your already highly ranked? Granted your not played against the scary Koreans but mastering a game like SC2 in a months is hard to believe.

I'm pretty bad at StarCraft II. I lack the split attention required to do well. When I'm taking an attack group out, I forget all about queuing up more units to build. I become totally focused on the single task at hand, a skill which comes in handy in many other games, but not here.

Surely the game being out a short time would make it easier for a new player to be highly ranked? Anyway, this isn't my first RTS, just the first I've seriously played online. I watched quite a few replays and tutorial videos before I got it, so I knew what I was doing more than the average newbie.

I also guess I learn fast, not to blow my own trumpet, but I normally pick up things pretty quickly. I'm hoping to get into Diamond within a few weeks or maybe a month, as I'm ranked 6th in my Plat division. If you have the game, hit me up and we'll play ^^

Well I am sure alot of players migrated from SC1 to SC2, so it would be harder to keep/catch up. If it was the first game then you would be starting from the place, experience wise but these guys have years of experience on you.

Watching and doing are two different things, I can watch MW2 vids and copy there style but it's unlikely to work for me.

Only RTS games I have played online are Company of Heroes and Hearts of Iron II
I suck at both, but it was me and a friend of mine against some bots. It was fun, have to admit

I only play CoH multiplayer any more, I used to play AoEIII a fair bit and got quite good.

I really enjoy Company of Heroes though, the control point gameplay is much more fun than the regular "destroy the other teams base" type ruleset of most other RTS games.
Took me a while for everything to click together though with a strategy, I haven't played many RTS games multiplayer.

If I was interested in SCII I'd happily trade knowledge, but I'm quite rusty with CoH so my info wouldn't be the best source.

Also, this Escapist Company of Heroes [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/groups/view/Escapist-Company-of-Heroes-group] group has a few people I've had a fair few games with. None of us are pros in there and we're very happy just playing games for fun, don't care if we get owned or dominate. Also it's quite small so we'll happily accept new players with open arms.
