I picked up Halo 3 a couple of weeks ago. I went in expecting a good game and that's what I got (just a side note there, I don't want this to turn into a "Halo sux" thread). But I hadn't expected other things... I had been on the Escapist forums months before I got Halo. I'd read many a threads about how everyone on XBL is a 12-year-old who won't stop screaming into the mic. I didn't want to believe this, but that's because I hadn't had much experience with a game that requires you to talk to your teammates (Team Slayer, Assault, CTF and the like). Wow. In retrospect, maybe I should've been a tad more cynical. The first online game I played had a nasally voice squeaking loudly into my headset. This became a regular occurence until I discovered the mute button (Woo! Mute!). I have to say, I thought you all were just being stereotypical. (Now I'm generalizing, there are a large number of people here who wouldn't immediately condemn the population of XBL). I can accept the fact that there are sane people on XBL who can communicate normally, but I don't seem to be matched with them. I don't condone ragging the population of XBL, but I have no problem encouraging a ban on someone who won't shut their hole.

Sooo what do you suggest?...Theres really nothing we can do my friend. While I'll admit there is less of those people you describe on PSN, but then again you don't know for sure cause the PS3 doesn't come with a mic for online, almost seems like bonus in some cases.

Developers try and put ratings on games, but kids gets their little bratty hands on them cause parents eventually cave to their pandering ways. Thats the way some things are, they likely will neer change

SOCOM: Confrontation has a version that comes with a headset for $60...

...And I can confirm that there ARE people like this that play SOCOM on the PS3. They aren't as common as the dickwads on Live, but they are there. Just last night I was in a match when a girl joined. She had just bought the game and asked "Is this the game type where you must plant the bomb to blow something up? I think it is, right?" and some guy on our team said "Hey baby, you can blow me ANYTIME as long as you are hot and have big tits!" She immediately left the match before I could even answer her question. And guys wonder why girls don't play online games...

I met another guy who WOULDN'T SHUT UP. He would run around yelling out "GET SOME BITCHES, GET SOME!" and every time he died (Which was often) he would start yelling explicits that questioned the sexuality of the person who killed him.

In one match I came in about halfway, there was a guy who kept ragging on about how "gangsta" he was because he got seven kills and four deaths, giving him the highest score on our team. He was insulting everyone else on the team, saying, and I quote: "You guys suck. I'm a beast. My team sucks fat dick!" Well, next match he came in fourth place on our team, behind me and two other guys, and like seventh place overall. He started yelling out stuff like "You fucks are CHEATING! I'm too gangsta to be beat by you! You have to cheat to beat me cuz I be a beast!" and then yelled out "Yo momma sucks my big balls and fat black cock!" eight times in a row before leaving.

So yes, PSN has its fair share of dickwads who abuse the headset. They aren't as common as the ones on Live, but they are still there. I think it is mostly just a testament to the fact that, since people have that blanket of anonymity online, they will use and abuse it to be the biggest douche bag they can possibly be because no one can do anything about it.

I can back up Raven, with a few Warhawk tales. WH came with the first official bluetooth headset for PS3. Most of the time, folks either used vox for real information or didn't say anything at all. On a few occasions, there would be someone either donkey braying constantly, or berating everyone's performance. The cool thing is, most games that have vox include a player-targeted mute, or if they don't they usually patch this in first thing. So, yeah, there are dickwads on PSN. It isn't epidemic tho and most (~95/100) of the time you either exchange real info or remain silent.

The greater internet dickwad theory [http://www.penny-arcade.com/docs/internetdickwad.jpg] comes into play anytime the internet is the communication medium, not just on forums. Unfortunately, vox comm in consoles must use the internet, thus activating the theorized behavior.

XBL community blows. There's nothing that can be done about it though.
