Computer Diagnostics

My Mom's laptop went bad awhile ago and since then has been replaced. I want to rebuild it, so I have another computer. I was wondering if anybody knew a good diagnostic program to help me along with this project, As so far all I know is that the problem occurs with booting and I don't really want to mess with trial and error.

Laptops are a hassle to get running well again when the problem is hardware related. What is the actual problem that occurs with the laptop?

Once laptops die they are pretty much unsalvagable. Its not worth the trouble tbh.

Upon closer inspection I have noticed the disk on the hard drive is damaged. Problem temporly solved I guess. Now I just need to get a decent sized hard drive.
