Pretty self-explanatory title. It seems the past couple times I've had to update my Nvidia driver, my computer will complete freeze up around the halfway point and I have to do a hard shutdown.

Is this normal? My Intel graphics card doesn't do this when it updates, so it seems to just be for my Nvidia card. Any guidance you PC nerds could give me?

Sounds like something is borked. Probably wouldn't hurt to uninstall everything nVidia from Programs and Features and reinstall the latest driver pack from the nVidia website, checking "Perform a clean installation" in the process. Hopefully that should complete without issue and won't leave you with any half installed updates.

Download and use the DDU from the Nvida forums [https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/550192/geforce-drivers/wagnard-tools-ddu-gmp-tdr-manipulator-new-cpu-core-analyzer-updated-09-04-2015-/] and follow the instructions. After use, make sure that C:\NVIDIA is deleted then try installing again.

If that fails you might have to repeat the last process whilst also going into the registry searching (ctrl+F) anything related to "NVIDIA" and delete it.
