computer hacking in video games

The only game where I've seen real-style hacking is Enter the Matrix. That used basic hacking techniques that, although now outdated, were accurate of the way people could hack computers at the time. A lot of hacking, however, is just stealing passwords and so on. You could probably gain access to military databases through a backdoor in the system with a simple internet connection and knowing an officer's login details. Makes you think how scary that would be, if that's what the security is really like on our national computer databases...

Personally I think Iji (an independent gamemaker game: have a search, it's brilliant) did hacking/cracking very well. You had a grid of increasing size depending on difficulty level, with a certain number of squares blacked out, making a path through. You had to guide a flashing light from one side of the grid to the other in a certain amount of time, avoiding the blacked out squares, and unable to go back on yourself.

Fallout 3 I thought was an intensely irritating system, leading to constant turning off and restarting the target computer....

The Splinter Cell games had some interesting techniques, especially Chaos Theory and Double Agent.

Pandora Tommorow and the first ones had it best.

Definitely fun.

And not that far from reality I think: People who have the necessary computer skills but lack the criminal energy write programs for people who don't have the skills but enough criminal energy (or stupidity) to actually employ those programs for personal gain.
