Recently i have noticed a batch file in my C: drive called xmp.bat, i was wondering what it is and if i should be worried about it..

I have tried google, but alas, to no good use.

i just googled it and got a bunch of forum topics where people are discussing malware and trojan horses

http://www.google.com/search?q=xmp.bat&rls=com.microsoft:en-us:IE-SearchBox&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&sourceid=ie7&rlz=1I7GFRC

it probably has something to do with whatever those smarter people are all talking about. that's usually how i solve all my computer problems.

Well, break it open, give me or one of the other technically-minded members of the forum a PM about its contents. Batch files are easy to read, and that'll help us determine what it's doing there.

This is definitely what you should do. Without looking at the contents of the file, it's hard to know whether it's harmful or not, as a lot of viruses and malware masquerade as important system processes or harmless files. I haven't tried for a while, but I think you can look at the contents of a .bat file with notepad without it running... anyone know if this is still the case?

Yeah, you can, but I prefer other text editors. Emacs is my flavour of choice.
Yeah, I know there are many far better text editors than notepad. However, notepad is the one that I can be almost completely certain thejdcole has.
