Yesterday I was on a video streaming site (I will withhold na- ANIME SHIPUUDEN!) when my computer suddenly froze. After 30 seconds or so without any activity whatsoever I decided to bring up task manager only to be met with a black screen which popped up ten seconds after I gave the command, and little window that said "security failure". I waited a few more minutes and it refused to budge so I restarted the computer in normal mode and everything seemed alright. 5 or so minutes after I logged on, it did the same thing again.

I restart the computer in Safe Mode with Networking and downloaded Avast home edition and Spybot Search and Destroy and have them both do thourough scans of my entire computer only to come up with nothing but some minor bugs. After fixing them I tried booting up the computer in Normal Mode again and it still froze. So after going through the same process again and still coming up with nothing I decided to do a full diagnostics boot and it still no problems came up. So then I do a system restore and found the problem still persists. So I reinstall all of the virus programs and do another battery of scans only to still come up empty once more.

I have thought of reinstalling my operating system, the only problem with that being that I don't have the installation disk when I recieved my new hard drive and I don't have the old one.

The computer is a Dell Inspiron 1525 running Windows Vista Home Premium. The only other problem I have had with it is when the hard drive crashed and the computer wouldn't switch over to the operating system.

I'm planning on taking the computer into a place where it can be fixed, but I don't want to spend $95 dollars on what could potentially be a minor problem. I've tried calling Dell Tech spport and they have pretty much been useless too.

Any help on this situation would be much appreciated.

Sounds like windows has succeeded in killing it's self.

Don't take it in, it's just a waste of money.

Grab all yo important stuff off the hd and install a copy of 7. Be happy.
Getting Windows 7 would be even more expensive than having to take it in. I'm looking for a solution that won't put a dent in my checking account.

well theres your problem
To be fair, this computer has been very reliable and has had very few problems compared to what others have.

Inspirons aren't some of the best-selling computers because of Voodoo or trickery.

first off that's not helpful in the least, secondly Dell has a bunch of great computers, i've dealt with thousands of them and maybe had a handful of issues with them.

as for the topic on hand

try hijack this [http://download.cnet.com/Trend-Micro-HijackThis/3000-8022_4-10227353.html] it might be able to help you

HOWEVER be VERY careful with it, use it in safe mode with networking so you can look stuff up on the internet if you are unsure. remove the stuff you don't need but make sure it really is something bad and not necessary

i will say check a lot of BHO listed by it, they are pesky and since internet explorer (which you shouldn't use) and explorer are linked it makes life tough and they are always turned on. also check some of the plugins and such that are in internet explorer
