I have a Toshiba Satellite cd655d-s5508 (catchy name huh) running windows 7

It keeps muting itself during games, full screen vids, and other full screen activities. It plays for a while but always mutes itself.

Headphones work normally and the speakers work again for a while if i plug headphones in and then pull them out.

I can also make the speakers work for a bit if i adjust the sound settings in WoW, but only for a few minutes.

Sounds like a mechanical switch that changes between speakers and headphones might be the problem (though it might be done electrically by noticing a current when you connect headphones).

Either way, sounds like a warranty case, if it's still covered.

EDIT: Tried updating any drivers? Might work too.

This is just your laptop speakers yeah, not third party ones?

When did it first start happening?, what I mean is did this start happening randomly, or was it after any updates to windows or installing software or hardware?.

When it cuts out without headphones plugged in, does your soundcard's control panel show that it has switched to headphones?

First thing to do would be to try updating the drivers as Twinerhz has advised. If there is no driver updates then get the latest drivers from the manufacturer and uninstall and reinstall them. If it started happening after a driver update then try to roll back to an earlier version.

If that doesn't work then try these Microsoft fixes for common audio/hardware problems, do them in order, the first one is audio the second for hardware.

The issue is with the built in speakers on the laptop, not a third party addon.
I tried upgrading the drivers and running those two links @mrdeclandeadly posted but the problem persists.

I am not sure how to acess my sound card, but the computer doesn't show the headphone icon when there are no headphones in.

A quick google will tell you that this seems to be a common problem with Toshiba laptops, and none of the forums seem to have a definitive fix.

Are you still under warranty?, you would be better served posting this query on the Toshiba forums, or contacting their customer support.
