First off I just want to say am sorry if it doesn?t belong here but just the escapist community seems very smart with computers.Alright this is a very unusual problem. I can't say my computer won?t read discs cause it will but it won?t read certain ones so am stumped. My most recent game was choas rising i put it in nothing happened. I had to install it on my laptop then install it off steam to my gaming rig. also i now realize many of my other games won?t work (crysis, sins of a solar empire, supreme commander). Yet games like Starcraft, Diablo, worms 2! the original rainbow six and even kohan all these games that shouldn?t work well with vista all work. I'd like to chop this up to it not reading anything but I even recently got a blackberry and that cd worked. I'd like to think all my games that won?t read are broken but why?d choas rising work on my laptop then?

just please guys i really need to fix this. Starcraft 2 comes out in 6 days am pretty stressed i got to get this fixed.

Wow your computer seems to be hit with a strange virus that only disables rubbish eye-candy games that suck.

Seriously, your drive may be dying. It can read the easier to read ancient CDs but new DVDs it can't spin up... try changing DVD drives, see how you go.

If you open the content of the CD drive, do you see files and all that? Or does it only show your CD drive with nothing in it?

Nothing.
What you could try to do is the followed: go to your configuration screen and then go to your system icon. After that, chose the Device manager and select your CD-rom drive. Remove it from the list and reboot your computer. It should reinstall the drivers of your drive, that could do the trick. If not, search for more up to date drivers. That's all I can think of right now. Good luck and, let me know if it worked.

Did both it reinstalled itself it says its up to date. I dont understand why some games work but more recent ones dont. unless you have more ideas i might just have to go to my local computer store and tell them to install a new driver :(.

Well, it could have been a problem with drivers that were corrupted, still a very slight chance but I'm not quite sure. Do you have any cleaning disks to try and see if that helps? Do you have more that one drive to try and see if the disk works in that one?
Have you done something with the hardware in your casing? Maybe the need to check if the cables from your mobo still are connected properly?

It's difficult to assess the situation, but maybe we'll solve it.

You're drive is toasted, get a new one, if it was a drivers issue it wouldnt be reading ANY discs end of story so unfortunately you have wasted your time reinstalling it.

Go get a new drive, they arn't expensive (or borrow a working one off someone), and put it in. If it doesn't work then you know you OS is having issues and thus you are in trouble which will likely result in a full wipe and clean install after a lengthy set of virus and malware scans.

But yeah, Drive broken, buy new one.
