Computer problems - CD/DVD drive

I've been trying to play a variety of computer games lately, yet I am having trouble getting some of them to work.

The Battle for Middle Earth and Medieval: Total War are simply not recognised when inserted into the CD/DVD drive (they do not auto-play and when I click on the drive in My Computer it pops up with a "please insert CD/DVD" message). I have checked the drivers, they are up to date and nothing has been disabled, and run the "Microsoft Fix It" programme which decided the (Medieval) CD was "unreadable media".

Yet, on one occasion of the 35+ times I have inserted Medieval, my computer managed to read the CD to install it (though it closes whenever I tried to play any game modes) - it has now gone back to not being able to read the disk at all.

The Battle for Middle Earth used to run absolutely fine, then a few months ago it just stopped being recognised. The CDs themselves are unscratched and clean.

Other games, such as the much older Age of Empires and the much newer Command and Conquer 3, work absolutely fine.

Does anyone have any idea what on earth is going on?
