I have no clue as to why it is running so hard, but it is constantly crashing my browser and driving me nuts. I've checked the processes, and there's over 75 running for some reason, but I don't know what most of them do, so I am hesitant to deactivate one.

Does anyone know what's going on?

Your computer is running a lot of processes.

You seem to have figured that much out, but from what you've told us, there's no real way to expand on that. :) Have you tried rebooting (if you have 94% CPU usage on a fresh boot, then you're likely either autorunning too much, or you've got a shitware infestation)

Either way, though, the number of processes is pretty irrelevant, especially on a Windows machine.

I restarted, ran a disk cleaner and defragmented, but I'm still getting problems.

There are free ware programs out there that let you pick and choose what runs on start up and can even tell you if the programs are good or not.

What you need to do:

- Track which process is using up the majority of your CPU time (it is almost never all of them; most often it's one or two culprits)
- Google the name of the process
- Decide what to do from there (and optionally, post it in this thread, which will then hopefully dispense advice)

The biggest drains seem to be coming from Firefox and dozens of processes called "Host Processes for Windows Services."

If Firefox is the issue, it's likely either a bad install or upgrade, or one of your addons is misbehaving. As for the host processes, check this thread [http://www.howtogeek.com/forum/topic/host-process-for-windows-services-nightmare] for a possible way to narrow it down.

I've had a defunct Windows Search Indexer take up almost 97% of my 3.4 Ghz x4 CPU after a failed swipe over Outlook. Common issue for those running WVista and W7. Assuming that's the case, just restart the index via control panel.
