My mcaffe subscription is running out (don't stare, came with the laptop and has been working nicely) and I would like some good suggestions for replacing the bugger.

Preferably a free Spyware security, Antivirus, Firewall, and Scanner. Money is an option, but please, as a last resort.

Get AVG Free (spyware, antivirus, scanner) and use Windows Firewall. Both are free, and the firewall should already be installed on your computer if you have Windows.

What kind of operating system are you running Shur1kan?

Antivirus get malwarebytes.

For a free firewall get Zonealarm or comodo.

I can provide you with links for both.

DO NOT FUCKING USE MCAFFE! It is as bad as a virus itself.

Avast is free (you can pay if you want) and it works really well. It scans everything that comes into your computer. Depending on what you do though that can slow your computer down.

I make my computer wear a condom at all times so it's protected.

I'd suggest Avira Antivir free edition, it works pretty well and I had heard that AVG free was losing support soon so I made sure I had Avira as a back up.

On a slightly related topic, does anyone know if these mentions of AVG support changes were correct or have I been misinformed?

nod security suite is a good pay one easy to use low resource usage.

kaspersky internet security is the top dog or near it imo it uses more resources but it will keep your system clean and stop anything before it infects you, even gone to trojan and phishing sites and kas will stop them dead in their tracks. pay tho.

if you got windows 7 microsoft security essentials is darn good and free. i am wary of the default windows firewall it only blocks traffic one way and fails alot of the more extreme firewall tests, but many people use komodo firewall, which is free, and is considered maybe the best firewall out there bar none, but from what i have read it takes a bit of tech savy to setup correctly.

I'm liking this one the best.

I'm on Vista Home Premium. 64 bit, if that matters (its really annoying when it does matter..).

Yes it does matter. I think Zonealarm for a firewall is a no-go.

Grab comodo firewall (it is better anyway, if more complex).

http://personalfirewall.comodo.com/

I myself don't use an antivirus protection, I just have malwarebytes and scan new folders with it and scan the system once a week. The free version doesn't have an "always on" virus scan but it is the best scanner around so it is worth getting in any case.

AVG, Spybot S&D w/teatimer install, and Malwarebytes. Those have protected my systems for a long time.

Immunize your system and browser with S&D and Malwarebytes.

If you ever get those self installing anti-virus programs claiming your system isn't protected unless you pay them $30 or more, just google the program name and there should be instructions on how to remove it.

comodo thats it swear it was spelled with a k lol.

i would go with that firewall less you go with buying a complete security package, otherwise i would just grab the comodo and then a decent av, spyware not like you need full time spyware protection especially if you use things like script blocker, ad blockers, etc for your browser.

might just google "best "free" antivirus, spyware" etc. number of good security sites where you can read up on the ones out there and see what people recommend.

Don't bother with paid antivirus. Just get you some firefox and head over to http://noscript.net/ and learn you how to work the add on. No script, no virus... unless you fall for some clever social engineering.

To support this claim, let me point out that Norton Antivirus is miles ahead. When my computer got craploads of malware (had it coming; I was browsing with IE6), McAfee basically went "OK, you have a shitload of spyware. Bye now."

Alas, Avast. It is amazing, and even saved my computer once! Before I had it installed, of course. I put it on all my friends computers. It isn't annoying, but just lets you know its there.

I second Microsoft Security Essentials. Also Firefox and NoScript; don't know how much it's kept bad things out.
