Computer Randomly Lagging

Okay, so I have this issue with the missus' laptop. Whenever we use it for, well, anything really, we'll get seemingly random stops. Sometimes all programs become non-responding (forget what Windows calls it in English), and occasionally you can alt-tab into a different program. It doesn't seem to have anything to do with clicking anything. I can be just scrolling through a piece of text and suddenly Opera will freeze. It happens with most any programs, including games, browsers and sometimes it doesn't need a program to be running at all.

At first I figured it must be a dozen trojans in the HDD, but it's been like this fresh out of the box. I've scanned the computer with IObit Malware Fighter and Advanced SystemCare5. Deep cleaned and optimized, too.

We're using a Packard Bell EasyNote TK81 with Windows 7 Home Premium OS including Service Pack 1. This bugger's got 4 Gigs of RAM and an AMD Athlon II P360 Dual-Core Processor. That's about all that the System Specifications screen gave me, anyways. Not terribly computer savvy, to be honest. Couldn't tell a motherboard from a video-card to save my life.

Any ideas, even wild and crazy ones, are widely accepted.

Unresponsive programs and random lock ups? Sounds like overheating... which isn't exactly an uncommon problem with laptops (with laptops unless you're getting extremely specific or fucked up bizarre problems the prime suspect is always overheating).

First up, make sure nothing is blocking/can block the intake vents on the bottom of the laptop while it's in use. Old girlfriend of mine used to crack the shits that I could use her laptop without any hassle at her kitchen table but it'd go tits up when she tried to use it in bed - the problem being that the blankets were blocking the intake vents and the poor laptop would overheat in short order.

I checked the vents, and they're clean and not being blocked by anything. We mostly use it on the kitchen table, too, by the way. :D Heck of a hassle putting it away when we have guests over.

This isn't a specific fix to the issue, but it should certainly speed the computer up if you're willing to change appearances.

Go to Control Panel and find out where to change the system theme (I think this is under appearances or display), then change that to windows classic. I've done this on 3 computers so far & the increase in speed has been very noticeable on all of them.

It sped up the general functionality of the machine, thanks for that. But it seems I am still experiencing constant problems with the non-responding programs. :(

Could you, after a crash happens, right click on computer and select 'manage computer'.
A panel should open with an item 'logs'.
Check the system an application logs for something obviousy wrong during the time of the crash (generated errors and stuff like that)
see if it refers to a service or program you can stop/disable.
You can do that with by typing msconfig in the run box when you click on the start menu.

A few questions:
- Is this the same for every program? (Are there any that seem to seize up less than others?)
- Is your OS a 64-bit installation rather than 32-bit? (might make a bit of difference in RAM)
- Can you post average CPU usage vs. time (or just an estimate)?
- Listing more detailed system specs would probably help also. I'm not the best person at repairing computers, but it could be something obvious, or someone else here might know a lot more.

Check the power settings, try turning off all 'Power Saving' modes (to 'Always On' or similar).

Make sure that the CPU is always getting full power, as it sounds like the CPU is going into power saving mode and shutting off some of the cores.

EDIT:

Sorry are the programs 'lagging' [running slowly/stopping for a few seconds] or 'chrashing' [stopping and not ever responding again]?

Lagging, look at the power settings.

I translated this as best as I could, but I'm getting an error in Home Group Service. The cause of the problem is apparently caused by the FDPHOST, or (poor translation) Function Search Service Host. Things is, I checked it out and it's turned off. I found out by using the 'manage computer' menu.

First question, yeah it's pretty much the same with all programs. I have not noticed any difference between programs, it seems to be generally quite random.

Second question, 64-bit Operating System.

Third question, err... I don't really know how. I mean, I know how to open the task manager and check from there, but posting any precise logs are way outta my league. I noticed some spikes on the graph, but not much else.

Last question, most specs I could find on my system.

The programs are stopped for a short while until they start responding again. I suppose the thread title is a mite bit misleading. I checked the power settings anyways, and set them to full-power. I'll post results later.
