Something strange is going on with my computer. Every time I try shutting it down it tells me that there are programs still running in the background. usually if I wait it shuts down on it's own anyway. I've tried doing a clean boot by turning off all the the Non-Windows related services. but it keeps happening. I heard that force shutdowns harm your computer so i'm scarred to ever turn off my computer entirely. Is this harming my computer? I don't wanna lose my data because my computer got brain damage.

P.S. here are my computer specs

Windows 7 Home Premium
Manufacturer: Hewlett-Packard Company
Model: p6210y
rating: 4.3 Windows Experience Index
Processor: AMD Athlon(tm)II X4 620 Processor 2.60 GHz
Installed Memory (RAM): 6.00 GB (5.75 GB usable)
System Type: 64-Bit Operating
Pen and Touch: Pen Input Available

Video card: NVIDIA GeForce 9100

PS: i originally posted this in the teck help thread above but i wasn't getting any feedback. please help.

Go to start->control panel -> system and security -> administrative tools-> view event logs -> system

look through that log, any red or yellow exclamation marks should tell what's causing the problem.

You are not really doing a forced shutdown but are stopping a process. This is much like stopping something by task manager

So, it's not damaging my computer? it's just annoying then.

Anyway, I did what you said and i found an error called Event 10016, DistributedCOM.

The application-specific permission settings do not grant Local Launch permission for the COM Server application with CLSID
{C97FCC79-E628-407D-AE68-A06AD6D8B4D1}
and APPID
{344ED43D-D086-4961-86A6-1106F4ACAD9B}
to the user NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM SID (S-1-5-18) from address LocalHost (Using LRPC). This security permission can be modified using the Component Services administrative tool.

Do you know what this means or know someone who does?

As a rough guess someone screwed up an installer by not giving permissions to the administrator or system account.

go to start and type in the search box regedit and hit return

then go

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE ->SOFTWARE->Classes->AppID

Right click on {344ED43D-D086-4961-86A6-1106F4ACAD9B} and select permissions and give administrators and system full control.

OK, so when I tried to change permissions it gave me an access denied message. so i went into advanced settings, switched ownership of the key to the administrator, and then gave the administrator full control. So then I tried shutting down my computer again and it did the same thing. gave me the option of force shutdown, but then turned it self off anyway. although before it shut off it briefly showed me something. i think it was the name of the program that's keeping it on, but it went by so fast I couldn't read it.

I need a way of making windows tell me by default what's keeping my computer on when i try to shut down.
