Hello, fellow Escapists! I thought I'd ask this question on here in hopes that someone has had a similar problem or has a solution.
Right, here's the deal... my friend and I record a podcast together for fun, but his old laptop got sent for repairs and we decided to use mine. I downloaded and installed Audacity and we got his microphone and plugged it in. Everything was working fine but there was too much static so we gave up, but when I went to then play some music there was no sound.
I have tried everything, the volume's up, it's not on mute, I've done a system restore, I've uninstalled and reinstalled the audio driver (Realtek HD Audio), the speakers are set as the default output device and everything appears to be working fine... but no sound is coming out...

Any ideas? Anybody able to help?

Static? From the mic?

Oh and dumb required tech support questions:

Are the speakers plugged into the right ports?
Did you SAVE the changes in your output device setup?

What I can't wrap my head around is how audacity, a recording and editing program, would kill your speakers.

Did you blow them out? Could the wires have come loose from age or a fall?

I was thinking it was probably the microphone rather than the program. Maybe the mic port got damaged. But it's not just the speakers, the headphone port doesn't work either, for headphones or external speakers
