Conceptions of Gamers

So I'm doing a report for university about a type of media that I like, so I decided that I would cover how gamers are viewed. So I would like your opinions of ways that gamers are either positively or negatively viewed. Also how we are misconcieved, such as violent or lazy etc. Basically this is started by that article that came out last year about how gamers are more civilly enganged than non-gamers. gamers are always portrayed as lazy, often as belligerent, almost always as asocial or even antisocial. unfortunately, i can't say there are ANY positive stereotypes of gamers... except maybe that we're all tech-savvy, which is unfortunately untrue.

All gamers are like 4Channers.

That's basically what SOME people think, just bringing up an example here
With that said however, "gamers" or "nerds" as a demographic are really becoming harder to define, with casual gaming and mainstream becoming more popular among other demographics.

Not all 4channers are trolls or homophobes/xenophobes/whatever. Remember that case in the news about a guy whose life was saved by 4chan or something?

OT: I'd have to agree that most gamers are viewed as couch potatoes who live off Cheetos and calling people fags on Xbox Live. That, or else (particularly with people from the Orient) people who spend hours memorising one thing to show off on Youtube, particularly Starcraft.

Well, let's see. People think I know the inner mechanics and lore of all games regardless of genre. People think I rage over Teamspeak or ventrilo and I know I don't do that. Everyone thinks I like Halo, and Dragon Age and Mass Effect. I hate all three of those games. I'm not very good at sports but I'm not completely terrible as others think. I'm definitely lazy. Not fat but thats just geneology. It's weird, I don't think I come off as a Gamer to people until I've told them. Guess I don't fit the stereotype enough. Sorry if that's not really helpful.

That we don't have girlfriends, and constantly drool over any girl we ever meet especially online. That we are socially inept or awkward and have no drive to achieve meaningful things outside of our game world. That we are all fat, lazy and have "neck beards".
