For those who might not be familiar with the topic of boosting, it's when someone wants to unlock the trophies/achievements for a video game for the sense of achievement or to brag to their friends or whatever floats their boat, so they team up with other people who also want to boost and they pursue those goals through whatever means necessary, whether that means killing each other multiple times or just working together as a team.

My question is, Escapists, how do you feel about this practice? And how do you react to those you might confront doing this?

I've boosted a couple small achievements and challenges. The challenge to throwing knife someone while blinded in MW2 I boosted with my buddy Scott. Tried to boost the Et tu, Brute? achievement for Bad Company 2, but ultimately there wasn't enough downtime with the distances we had to cross.

Nuke boosting ends the game for everyone else, so that's not kosher. But as long as your boosting doesn't hamper the gaming of others, who cares?

Edit: I had to play my buddy Scott on Splinter Cell: Conviction's Versus mode because the first five opponents I faced quit after losing the first of five rounds.

Eh, it can get annoying when you're waiting in the lobby and people are begging for achievement help. I just hunt the people down and kill them.

So yeah, it can be annoying, but funny as hell. Especially if you get the achievement they're trying to go for without trying.

I guess it's ok unless they mod it or it interferes with other peoples games AKA the FUCKING Nuke in MW2. Didn't even try to get one on principle (no i don't suck you can't prove anything!)

I'm a team player, so when I see someone not participating, I check it out. I don't even know how many nuke boosters I killed in MW2.

Edit: That's unclear now that I look at it. I always played team based matches and it someone never went for the flag, and just hid in the back I would find them and make sure they weren't boosting. Same for teammates who repeatedly died and tac-inserted.

that's pretty much it.

I see no problem with it. I don't see an achievement that you didn't work as hard as possible for as any less prestigious. However, encountering boosters and people begging for boosts is annoying.

In one TF2 match I was in, it was really late, like 3am, and it was just me and 3 other guys, and we were all voice chatting, and two of them say "Hey, wanna let me get my taunt achievement on you?" so they set it up, and JUST before the guy got it, I ran in, tauntkilled the enemy and then teabagged him for the lulz.

was great.

Only if the achievments actually make you feel good, cause sometimes they can be rather excessive and dumb.

I have boosted for rank and credits in Halo Reach a few times when got bored. If it's not specifically against the rules of the game, i don't see any problem with it. It just comes down to you spending a lot of time doing something repetetive, which i think is punishment enough.

Is it still boosting if you just want the achievement with no plans to act like an ass about it after unlocking? Because that's what I want. I want to work with people to unlock achievements. Hell, my GF and I have already done some (she's also helped me get starter Pokemon and version exclusives). It's the boasting I don't care for. What's the point? It's not like achievement points/ trophies can be traded in for a real-world benefit.

Same here. I quite happily drop the team objective and turn booster-hunter if I find people in my lobby doing it. I know some people see it as harmless but when you strip away the excuses it's cheating. The most amusing thing is when I'll kill/team-kill boosters and then they report me for 'Unsporting Conduct'! What, so I've found someone cheating so they report me for not playing fair? I'd be offended by that, if I thought it mattered in the slightest.

Back OT: I don't boost, and I don't like people in my lobby boosting. If people wanna boost, fine, they can just do it in another lobby where they're not gonna spoil my game.

You call it cheating. I call it giving the fuck you right back to the idiots that thought these types of achievements are a good idea in the first place. It is nice 1king a game. It sucks having 900 and missing the 100 not because of your skill (or lack thereof) but because some asshole thought hey lets make them play for 10 years legit to get it.

I'm not so fussed about achievement boosting, that doesn't really affect the other players in a lobby and I've never really bothered with achievements anyway - if I get an achievement through normal play then great, but I don't go out of my way for them. Where I consider boosting to be cheating is when players boost to unlock an advantage for themselves or their team (like NukeBoosting in MW2) because that kind of boosting affects the experience of the other people in that lobby in a negative way.

Basically -
Boosting for achievements: Doesn't bother me. If that's how you play the game, go nuts.
Boosting to affect the outcome of a Multiplayer game: It ruins the game for the rest of the lobby and shouldn't be tolerated.

Yeah I am in 100% agreement with you. I have boosted some online games for achievements with a group(s) of dedicated people. We were always quite clear of our intentions in the lobby before the game started letting the other players have a choice as to not interfere with their experience.

But boosting to get an advantage is pitiful. If you can't do it with your own skill then there is no point.

I don't understand boosting, but if that's what people want to do I don't care. It is pretty fun to stumble upon their little boosting operation and kill them tho.

Well I've heard of nuke-boosting on MW2 and as far as I'm aware it was called "farming" achievements. I don't do it, though I know shit loads of people did it on TF2 to unlock things on the updates. Personally it was the beginning of the end when they brought out the medic update on TF2.

Actually I did do it on my friends MW2 just because we only played locally and I wanted to unlock more guns which would have taken ages in single 1 vs 1 games.

I think I only boosted In halo 3 for some of the rumble pit achievements, they were not hard to do but you know they were more like the stars have to align just right and sod it I don't have all day, and wanted that katana to dick around with.

If it doesn't hurt anyone it shall pass, If you nuke boost, or interfere with fun go ahead. I no longer need to boost in black ops because for some reason the game shit it's self and gave me 1.3 billion cod points. It's like I don't even have to think to level anymore I have too much money.

If we are only 3-5 people on a server in TF2 and a guy asks if I can help him I will, but when it comes to dungeon boosting in WoW I only do it for friends.

And I generally only help with achievs if you help me after, I scratch your back you scratch mine.

I don't approve of it, but it doesn't mean i can stop people from doing it themselves.

But i was accused of boosting in Halo: Reach. All i did was play firefight. a lot of firefight. i've killed enough covenant to populate my hometown, to give you an idea

I boost only the hilariously random trophies.
Example: Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood.
I made it to level 50 by simple gaming, cause I love the multiplayer there.
But they have a trophy of "Get first place in the last 10 seconds" which also means "without being first before the last 10 seconds" Srsly... When I'm awesome, I'm just first. I can't be exactly on the clock.

It's sort of dumb to even go as far as to boost for a goddamn trophy, but I made some nice friends through boosting. So...

Shirokurou's life lesson: Boosting once in a while is OK, if you have fun while doing it. Boosting all the time is... your choice.

I only boost when I've been cheated out of something. Example: back on Left 4 Dead, the Crash Course achievements were glitchy. I 25 pounced someone, it didn't unlock, so me and a friend 25 pounced each other until it unlocked.
