Hi everyone. I was at home playing Braid. After the seventh bazzilionth puzzle failed again, I got really frustrated and made my way downstairs. My father asked what was wrong and as soon I started to say that it was about a game, he immediatly said: "How can you possibly get frustrated by a game, something that is not real? It's fiction, you don't die in real life, you know..." what was followed immediatly by me doing this: http://mypetjawa.mu.nu/archives/picard-facepalm.jpg which unfortunatly but not unsuspectedly followed in a slap at my face. By now you probably guessed that my father probably doesn't game at all and knows nothing of games. Be surprised because he plays games A LOT. No small stuff like pinball or play cards, no sir, he plays COD4, WoW and the lot!

My question to you now, Escapist Community, is this: How does one get immune to frustration???

It depends who your influences are. I get frustrated easily because my dad get's frustrated easily, so it's probbaly something like that.

it means he is a gamer who can hold a grip on reality while he plays, and he knows that you shouldn't get so frustrated at a game if it is truly frustrating you,you should get off and take a break

hint hint.

I'm not sure if you can. I guess the main two ways would be to

A) Become good at absolutely everything, thus eliminating all need for frustration, or

B) Travel to Asia and spend years in the mountains learning some kind of Zen relaxation technique to alleviate the frustration and allow you to complete the game in piece.

I myself get frustrated all the time with games, so I sympathise.

I think that I've just gotten good at avoiding it over the years. Usually in a game such as Braid, I just keep telling myself that there is a solution, it's right here, just keep working at it and you will figure it out. If I really do run into something unavoidably frustrating, then I just do something else.

Well, your father is a wise man. Or he suffers from brain damage. Either way, he has learned something we all should be able to do.

And you guys must have a good internet connection for someone not to get frustrated with a multiplayer game. Seriously. The most frustrating thing in games: LAG.

You become frustrated at things you are attempting to do (Or actions of others), so it doesn't matter if the matter is in a game, YOU are still the one trying to do it.

Your dad has clearly never done the same tedious ten minute long thing half a dozen times. I don't think it's possible to become immune to frustration. That's why I keep a pillow next to me when I play games so that I can beat the crap out of it. One good smash is enough to placate me until I die again.

Frustration is directly tied to how invested you are in a particular outcome. If you're dead-set on finishing a game/puzzle/task, then your inability to do so will create a lot of frustration. But if you can enjoy the process more, and the outcome isn't as important, then you're in a win-win situation and frustration won't happen.

Long story short: don't care so much.

Good point, because I'm a person who feels so forced to complete a game to 100%, THEN I feel that I accomplished something :/
