do you think that with the current economic crisis, and the profits being lost with every used game sold, do you think in the coming years we could see a form of drm in console games? we are already seeing it in that, downloadable content is restricted to the first console it is downloaded on. Is the fear real? what do you think?

Because DRM is working so well on other platforms *ahem*PC*ahem*, the only true way to stop piracy is as the user above me said, requiring unique serial keys for online play. Tribes 2 is specifically what I'm looking at here.

I'm no piratical technical wiz here, but I wonder if regular DRM would even work for consoles. From what I know of the method one uses to play stolen console games, I thought you could pretty much work around any DRM.

At any rate, it depends on how much money the distributors feel they are losing to theft. That's it. If they think they're losing millions of dollars, they'll step it up. I guess the heat just isn't on yet.

Wait, I can only assume you're talking about downloaded games, since the point of "digital rights management" is to make sure people don't abuse the fact that the data is on your hard drive. Which the Xbox, at least, already has. On either platform, games installed to the hard drive have to have the CD in the disk tray in order to run, which would also count as a simple form of DRM. It's not really a question of "when might this happen", since the answer is "last year".

I believe some game devs want to hurt the resale market by implementing DRM for retail games that binds it to the first console it's used on. Or maybe they're referring to some sort of flash media as opposed ot game discs. Anyway, point is, buying pre-owned games hurts the devs and they're pretty cut up about it.

I'm in favour of DRM on consoles if only for no other reason that it might force Gamestop to abort their corrupt business practices.

Wow that is completely ignorant to think that Gamestop's business practices are corrupt while mentioning in the same sentence that you, Kermi, would support DRM. You do realize that when consumers purchase a product that ownership of such a product is transferred from the publisher to the consumer right? Well this also, strangely, applies to software, as it to is a product and ownership also transfers to the consumer, so knowing this why would you EVER believe that the consumer should have to suffer/pay for a game that is essentially a rental just because Gamestop likes to turn a large profit on a used game like any other business in the used product markets do?
