When it's directly at the expense of its consumers and the broader art form? Um, yeah. Unambiguously evil. As one of those consumers yourself, I'm not sure why you would ever desire to take any of that lying down.
Investment just magically happens, if the companies didn't exist all the same games would exist. Bayonetta 2 would have had the ever so gracious EA swoop in to pay for its development... wait they are "evil" too so... whose a darling right now... ah yes CD Projekt lets go with them as they'd have done it no doubt.
Those in house studios... well we'd likely be with out them and their wonderful games... but we'd instead have disposable cheap indie tat to console us I suppose. Those brought and supported... well money grows on trees.
I'd rather have the games in existence I enjoy than take a gamble on this "free" scenario you wish to present thank you very much.
Expense of the consumer? Who? You? Certainly doesn't effect me.
As for damaging the art form... I'm one of the biggest supporters of that (the art form, not damaging it) and they aren't damaging it in any significant way. You want to make a game you can (indie), you want to make a game that has all the cool kid graphics you can (the "holding back" argument)... nothing is stopping you except feasibility of course.
