Console shooter controls - what was I doing wrong?

I don't own a console, but a nearby gaming venue has both XBox and PS3. I tried playing some obscure shooters on both, and having to aim with the arrow-like controls felt extremely inconvenient. In fact so much so that I stopped trying after half an hour on both consoles. What was I doing wrong?

(No, that's not a bash on either console shooters or the consoles, so don't think of it that way)

Thanks

Did you try adjusting the sensitivity settings? Do you usually play inverted? Switching the control scheme around?

I know, as a console gamer, I usually have my own custom settings for each game

Nothing. Nothing at all. I'm a console gamer and cannot use the controls on a computer. It's just something you have to get used to. Quad 08 does have a point, but there's more to it then that

Sometimes it's as simple as "turn" and "strafe" being set on the wrong stalk. If they get reversed by an idiot designer away from the established norm, it confuses the hell out of me!

Console controls for shooters, except for the senstivity and depth of field, tend to be much better.

If one could find a way to overcome or do away with the sensitivity issues, the controller would reign supreme in the shooter world.

You were using analog sticks, right? "Arrow-like" is not a way I would describe FPS controls, so if you could please elaborate on what was wrong, it would be that much eaiser to help you.

I can't play console shooters. The mix between inverted and non with their axis and just the way the entire setup works makes me hate aiming with one. The only reason I play Timesplitters is that it has aim help where I'm not even aiming at the thing and it dies. It works pretty well with the buttons for everything else, but aiming is IMPOSSIBLE for me on a console. Mice and Keyboards are just 100x more intuitive when it comes to, "point and shoot" probably because it started as, "point and click".

please dont tell me you were using the D pad? but its just something you gotta get used to, not trying to brag but im a beast with the sticks, then i switched to pc gaming for a while with a few people i knew and coming back to console i sucked real hard dick for a while..its different especially with the strafe/aim system setup, try customizing the control scheme to what you think works best for button wise, some games have some FUCKED up control setups, can't think of any off the top of my head but they put the melee and jump buttons in weird spots and you end up lookin like a slow retard trying to shoot someone while melee'ing

Looking at google pics, I think what I was using was the d-pad, though I don't see a difference, and I have no choice about what kind of stick to use.

When it comes to console shooter, I've always found that effective aiming is equal parts strafing and timing. Movement is just as important to hitting a target as aiming.

It sounds like you were using the D-pad instead of the analog stick, which would make things significantly harder and less accurate.

Depends on what your used to. Me I'm great with using a controller but once someone stuck me with a mouse and keyboard(Crysis) it was like I had never played a game before in my life

You did nothing wrong. FPS is better with mouse and keyboard. It always is. Just watch pro game play from mlg. Watch how the halo or COD kids move, then go look up some old Quake III or tf2 videos. mouse/keyboard is faster, more accurate, and game play can be generally faster because you can be more accurate. Ever wonder why you run so slow in GOW? try playing UT3 with a controller... Same company, two very different games.

Well, it is [HEADING=1]Completely and utterly down to personal choice[/HEADING], so if you're used to pc then you will have to work on playing with a joystick.
