Hey, I've been a console gamer my entire life, always enjoyed them and have always had the "why have a PC when you need to upgrade every month" view. It recently occurred to me that PC gaming looks much better. But I've had the same computer since 2005 and it is really bad. Now when I say really bad. I mean REALLY BAD. I run counter strike source on lowest settings on 9fps with 11ms. Now I'm going to buy a new PC to run games. Since I have no idea about PC's in general, I'd like the escapist to tell me if this is an OK PC

I want to know if it could run Skyrim smoothly, BF3, Mass effect 2, and Borderlands.
Thanks guys.

It's best to build your own PC. You'll save a boatload of money and have the satisfaction of using something every day you built yourself. Get a buddy whose done this kind of thing before and enlist his help.

Would need to know more before giving advice - do you have a budget for what you want to spend? What games do you want to play? What else will you use the PC for?

A bit more info would certainly help, if you could provide it.

Pre-built vs. building your own has pros and cons.

Anything less than $1000 Australian dollars, I listed the games and Pretty much just gaming and youtube.
What are these pro's and cons? :)

For a higher end gaming rig you'll have to build yourself (or have someone build it for you who'll do it for free).

I quickly specced one up from pccasegear.com.au and got a respectable gaming rig priced up at AU$970 (i5-2500K, GTX 560Ti OC, 620W Antec PSU, 1Tb HDD, 4Gb RAM, Win7 64 HP OEM). Won't win any online ePene waving contests but it will play the games you want and play them well.

With an hour to research and refine the specs I could probably knock the price down to AU$900 flat or squeeze a bit more power into it (double the ram and get some good aftermarket CPU cooling to overclock the CPU). With a bit more time I could probably knock down the price AND up the power.

Of course, if you're willing to give up a bit of baseline unit power and a lot of futureproofing, you can go with an AMD based system and save some cash.
