Consoles...?

Okay, I got 'inspired' by a recent thread, called 'Should Nintendo Stop Making Consoles?' (sorry, I am just too lazy to actually link it, but you can search for it, if you're that interested in seeing it, geez...) That provoked a thought from those rusty cogs residing in my mind, concerning consoles in general. Now, I am a PC gamer, have been since probably 10, 11 years ago or so, but I used to own a lot of consoles. I had a SEGA, a NES, a Super Nintendo, and my most recent one was a PS2, for which I had an urge to buy. That's not to say, however, that I've not played games on the more recent consoles, like the PS3, the Xbox360, or the Wii - I have, it's just not been at home, but at slightly-wealthier-than-me friends of mine, and conventions and such. So, right now I have no console, since I left my PS2 back home, and all the rest are scraps by now, and, like I am sure many others who are in a similar situation like mine have done, I've contemplated purchasing one.

At last, we get to the main part of this topic: Everytime I decide to buy a console, or even consider it, I ask myself not 'Which one?', but rather 'What is the point, at all?'. I mean, think about it: If I buy one, right, I get a limited set of games I can play on it, so I still can't fully enjoy the whole console expirience, because I am not one of those people who can afford to actually buy all of the major consoles out there, and mantain a fresh repertoire of games for each one. So, again, I'll feel somewhat depraved of the whole bargain. Also, it's very inconvinient, I mean, for a person that moves around alot, like myself, frequently changing habitats and what not. Plus, every now and again, I'll have to update my hypothetical console collection, with a new bright and shiny VCR-impersonator, because some wanker, in some big corp. decided it was time for a major 'innovation' in the gaming industry (because games really do need their slightly-improved graphic engines, oh yes!), and those usually cost slightly more than your GeForce GTX 590, if you get what I mean. And, finally, it's time for that one-statement-flamewar-decleration question: What do Consoles have that PC's don't, besides Mario and Zelda (and a few other good games)? I mean, seriously, think about it? The controlers? Easy! You can get PS controlers for a PC as well, if you're that hung-up on the idea. You can get an equally gigantic monitor, directly proportional to the size of the screen on your TV, so that's no loss. Graphics are basically the same. Blu-Ray? Please, nothing a Blu-Ray player can't fix! (besides, I think blu-ray is just a waste of money). Motion Controls! Right. Well, let's give this one the benefit of the doubt, or whatever, and say that yeah, it could potentially be something worthwile. And I don't even want to begin listing the virtues of a PC, but hey, those are virtues in my opinion, they could be vices in yours.

So, overall, to sum-up this ridiculously large post: What, in your opinion, is the reason for the consoles' existance, and is it really worth it? What am I missing-out on, so much? In the end, what keeps you glued to your console, as opposed to your PC?

And, I know there are going to be some people, who will consider this a 'hate-speech' or 'rant' or whatever, but it's not. Especially people who own every console, ever made, ever, and for them a person not being able to afford all of them, is like alien talk, or something. It's a genuine question of mine (or questions), and I am really interested in seeing people's replies.

P.S. No 'TL;DR's please. If you didn't read it, than why are you replying? Oh, hung-up on just one of all of my sentances and statements? Save it. Thank you.

It's cheaper and easier than a PC, to put it simply. Who wants to set up a PC, which can be expensive and/or complicated, when you can just boot up a console and play in seconds?

I have a PC and several consoles, and I like both equally. My computer monitor also gives me some eye strain, so that's another reason I like playing on a TV rather than the PC.

Also, consoles tend to be better for casual local multiplayer. I mean, you can LAN with computers, but it lacks some of the comfort of just sitting on the couch with some friends for splitscreen whatever.

Just my thoughts on the whole thing.

I've got a PC and a couple of consoles, and whilst I used to find consoles much better for gaming I went off them, as that was about all I did on them, but on a PC you can do so much more, and with more ease too.
