For many years, Multiplayer gaming and I had an understanding; I didn't do it, it left plenty of room on the disk for an engrossing and enjoyable single-player mode. Whilst sitting around the PS2 with a few friends was fine, the moment the Internet was added things tended to go downhill; my few attempts at online PC gaming had generally ended due to a spam-rush, which didn't go down well with me as I don't enjoy that style of play at all.

The final nail in the coffin for me has to go, unquestionably, to Halo 2. I played quite a few games of Halo 2 with friends, and we went online for some of them. I'm not going to claim I was totally clueless, because I wasn't. It was just that too many games involved Campers, or retarded lunatics bouncing up and down spamming grenades, and of course the endless verbal diarrhoea that spews over the chat system... it all reached the point where I just said "fuck it", and swore never to touch the cess-pool that was online gaming again.

Well, Metal Gear Online managed to improve Multiplayer's reputation for me, and Resistance 2 restored my faith in Humanity (or, at least, the bits of it that owned a PS3). Finally, I can look at a game for its Online capabilities! Huzzah!

This brings us neatly to Warhawk. Warhawk is a game that always tempted me in a rather childish "lookit the Airplanes!" kind of way, but even having forgiven the Internet I still haven't become blissfully ignorant of reality, and thus one major hurdle remains; Multiplayer Only. As much as Warhawk sounds fun, I am concerned about the Learning Curve will be far too unforgiving. I don't really like the idea of trying to work out how to make the aircraft go up and down whilst being fired at by AA missiles every ten seconds, and respawning three minutes away from a new vehicle.

Anyway, all of this is probably not helpful to anyone, so let's get to the point; just how Newbie (un)Friendly is Warhawk? Is it a game you can pick up quickly, or does it involve several days of being murdered horribly until you discover by dumb luck which button fires missiles? Does it have a tutorial system, or do you just get the controls in the manual and have to hope for the best?

Download the demo is the best advice I can give. The game isn't noob friendly at all, but if you get the demo you'll be put into games with people who are also new, plus there's a tutorial there as well.

PS buy the expansions, they're awesome.

Hmm. I'm guessing a demo would answer all of my questions, but for some reason I didn't think to look for one. ¬.¬

Online only games don't usually have demos, so that's understandable. Warhawk is a good game, but there is a major difficulty curve. You will often get shot down quick in the planes if it's a game of 24 or more. The real fun is in the newest expansion pack which includes jetpacks.

It's an awesome game, the difficulty curve wasn't that hard if you ask me but I picked it up scant weeks after the release so things were probably a lot lighter in that respect. You can also start up a LAN server for yourself and just muck around on the map on your own to get a feel for the weapons and vehicles, I found this helped quite a bit.

I haven't played it in ages, not having a credit card makes it impossible to get the expansions and my current internet speed is sub-par so it'd just be annoying anyway.

Also, don't underestimate the Jeep.

I played the training missions and for 2 days I just got shoot. I got a few kills but more deaths than I can count. Oh wait I can.

The difficulty curve is a bit unforgiving but it's fun.

What this guy said, except I just got the game recently and wasn't aware there were expansions.

Definitely not noob friendly.

Online almost never has tutorials, or at least not the ones I've played. You just jump into the fire and learn by failure. After you get your ass handed to you for a while you start to get the hang of things.

I dunno I generally play games to get away from having to interact with people as the majority of them make me want to jam shards of glass into my eyes. So online only games have about as much appeal to me as an enema. I do however remember playing warhawk on ps2 and it was a good game, so maybe I'll keep the ps3 version in mind if I feel like trying something new.

Well, I took the plunge - bought Warhawk, and all three Expansion Packs.

The game has proven my fears accurate; it gets absolutely brutal at times. Wound up playing on a Hero game where the other team had everything but our HQ, so it consisted solely of "take off, get shot down by AA," or "Take off, land on enemy platform, get slaughtered because they've all got rocket launchers and mines everywhere."

However, the game does prove very fun when it goes right. I love screaming in, slamming on the Hover-jets and strafing an enemy jeep, then bugging out before anyone can return fire.

I also got the Vengeance trophy in my first game - threw a grenade, died, blew up the guy who killed me. Feels good to deny people! XD
