There is a difference between "Steampunk" and "Gaudy clusterfuck". Half of these outfits do not know the difference.

Yes, indeed and it's a shame that's too common the case with these. For example,I'll just leave this here. [http://www.somethingawful.com/d/fashion-swat/steampunk-fair-swat.php]

Beware: You've mentioned SteamPunk. This will surely attract that awful class of folks that feel they are the Keepers of that label, and they will arrive to instruct you (and the fine folks in your photos) on the incorrectness of your ways.

For now, we'll call them Steampunk Hipsters, but I foresee a swelling of their ranks that will inevitably give rise to a new movement: HipsterPunk.

I don't know... Many of these outfits just seem to be different fabrics/materials randomly put together and don't seem to have any particular direction.

I wouldn't call half of these steampunk cosplays for the same reason I wouldn't put on a corset with otherwise regular clothes and call it a Renaissance outfit.

I agree - it all seems a bit directionless and functionless. Too many epaulets and buckles. I'm interested how these cosplayers would justify the outfits in their own context.

Too late, it's already there, it's got a pic of a dude on stilts for no real reason I can see other than they're stilts

Ah, you saw it too? I've seen plenty of cosplay, but like you said, when I saw these pictures, I just saw... hipsters. I'm kind of new to steampunk. Are they dressed up as actual characters, or just wearing period clothing a la Renaissance fair?

Actually, no, I kind of meant the opposite.

I'm talking about the people who, every time steampunk comes up, rush in to claim "That's not really steampunk." They'll often go on about how it was so much better and purer before it got all popular and mainstream, and how just adding gears and copper tubing to stuff doesn't make it steampunk.

And, to me, that's like telling teeball players, "You're not playing real baseball." Maybe not, but they're getting introduced to it and they're having fun. That increases the chance that they'll get more into it and learn more about it, and it means more attention being given to the genre/subculture.

It's funny. One of the supposedly defining features of the -punk genres is that they are about how, even in the face of new world-changing technology, the ruling class uses it to keep control, and as a result the world doesn't actually change much. That's right -- trying to keep the new toys out of the hands of the lower class (because they wouldn't know how to "use them right") keeps everyone's world from improving.

I see. With that said, I think just about everything has a hipster subculture now. A bunch of my fellow metalheads already admitted to having hipster tendencies, while my roommate is always talking about what is and isn't REAL food. Anyway, with that out of the way, could you please explain, are these outfits character cosplay or are they just dressing steampunk? I'm really curious.

I love the older Steampunk couple near the end there.
That would be pretty epic someday. Just retire and make epic steampunk cosplay.

Pretty sure it's just general steampunk.

I don't even really like Steampunk and half of these don't at all strike me as Steampunk.

I absolutely love the steampunk aesthetic, but I've never put together an outfit. I think people enjoy various different aspects, really: some will enjoy making the stuff, others will enjoy wearing odd clothins. I just like thinking of ideas (usually overthinking) and making rough "sketches" (I'm no artist - I use MS paint to give the gist!)...have some interesting ideas for a steampunk Star Trek (I know, probably a bit common, but it's an interesting base to flesh ideas out about), for example, but I don't forsee them coming off the drawing board

I'd say which ones I like but then I would be bombarded with "THAT'S NOT STEAMPUNK, CAN'T YOU TELL!?" Seriously the different "Punk" things piss me off because of that....

Suffice it to say I'm not a purist, I'm not going to sit here and measure the brass to wool ratio on your outfit or count the number of exposed gears and tubing on your personage.

That being said I'm not sure how much of that was "Steampunk" and how much of it was just "folks in suits/dresses."

Then there's number 22...which is an amazing costume to be sure.

But that's just straight up fantasy leather armour is it not?
