We all have rituals, habbits and tactics when it comes to conversation, whether its a full proof strategy or a tact in its beta stages we try and manipulate others when conversing in order to access information or avoid a subject, hell we even manipulate our language in order to ease a listener into trusting us. So how about sharing some of your own 'Conversational magic', doesn't have to be something you actively do, just discuss anything you use, even on forums such as misspelling on purpose in order to portray stupidity or humor.

Personally, I use sarcasm as a way of distancing myself from a person when conversing, I implement it even when asking a serious question as to not be taken too seriously should I fear the outcome or possibility of judgment. That's all for me for now, I'll post more as they come to me.

So now we'll turn that spotlight on you! What do you do in conversation? Maybe something a bit more tactful such as spinning a topic, do share.

[I'd also like people to note that if they expect a reply from me, or want me to notice their post it would be much easier if they quote me, ta]

Well, I say I hide part of myself from everyone, no one knows everything about me, I have parts to me that certain people should not know, but others should, and vice versa. Also, I believe I'm good at coersion, and white lies! Though my dad is getting good at seeing through my white lies, after... 5 years.

I suppose I can relate to living sides of yourself, but that's most likely simply because I spend too much time in my head. Weighing moral and philosophical situations can really reveal things about yourself, though perhaps the side people see of you is really more who you are then what no one will ever see. (since no one really gives a fuck about a single tree that falls alone in a forest) Apart from the side that no one else sees there's always the separation of social groups as well as family. I've always been terrified of having that two collide.

But in any case, is there a strategy you use in order to accomplish this? Any particular way of lying? My personal favorite is the 'lesser evil' lie, wherein to cover up something bad you just cover it up with something less bad. Of course I've always been good at faking 'sincerity'.

Well I would hope so. Last I checked you legally have to.

...I do that. Make a joke to avoid answering a question

I have an odd talent for picking up accents. Even without trying i will often pick up on someones accent, and start using it myself while talking to them. Half the time im not aware im doing this. It seems to put them at ease and help them open up. Or make them think im mocking them and really piss them off

A great tip I learned from a mate a few days ago:

When having a conversation with someone you want to impress, pretend you're getting a call (or if you actually get a call you can use this trick anyway), but ignore it (provided you're confident the caller won't mind), saying you'll call later. Often, it will make the person you're with feel important and valued. It's essentially a massive, yet subtle, compliment.
