Whelp, I think it's time to throw in the towel.

It's time to end this nonsense and just give up on gaming.

Maybe I've just gotten too old (I'm twenty, so that's right out), or maybe too busy, or maybe I'm just tired of videogames.

All of them. All of it. Tired of the extremists. Tired of the 2deep4u pseudo-intellectuals. Tired of everything being teh sexist/racist.

I'm tired of the constant calls to be taken seriously. Taken seriously by whom exactly?

Tired of games sacrificing gameplay for pretentious meta-narrative bullshit, tired of unentertaining seriousness, tired of AAA treating me as a wallet on legs, tired of DLC being little more than stuff that should be part of the main game, tired of games lasting barely longer than 7-8 hours and being charged sixty bucks for it.

Tired of consoles filling themselves with junk, tired of constant firmware updates, or game update, of constant patches because the devs couldn't be arsed to test before shipping and are treating us, the consumer, as unpaid beta-testers.

And if the new rumors about the next generation have a shred of truth to them, it's just going to get worse.

But I don't want to leave the gameing scene. This is the one hobby I've really enjoyed, and I've been doing it since was six years old. I have fond memories of playing Tachyon when I was eight, of Starlancer when I was ten, of Ratchet and Clank when I was twelve. I remember the day I bought my 360 with my own money, how happy I was to finally be part of scene.

So convince me to stay escapists; give me one/three good reasons why I should stay in the gameing scene.

Hell, list all the reasons I should stay, or give me a few more why I shouldn't. Discuss among yourselves whether should you stay or should you go.

First, get off game forums. Obviously the discussions are ruining your enjoyment of the hobby.

Second, research games that are similar to those you've enjoyed in the past OR try a genre you have no (or very little) experience in. I do this anytime I am feel very bored with gaming. Every year or two I discover a new type of game I never thought I'd enjoy.

Finally, just play. Forget all the issues pervading the community and the industry. Just focus on playing games you enjoy.

Ok joking aside...

If you truly enjoy it, you won't leave.

There can be several reasons you feel like you do but we can't give you answers.

OK seriously Guffe stop joking, for real this time....

I noticed a year back that I play a lot less than I used to but I still game, maybe not everyday but there never goes a week without opening the console at least a few times.
Maybe a break is good? Have you been playing too much? Nowadays my gaming mostly depends on the releases, I bought a WiiU 4 months ago and immediately played 6 games in 3 months which is a lot for me but now when waiting for new releases I game a lot less again.

Don't think too harshly about, you'll find your games and the time again. But you're never too old to play games!

Well, Metal Gear Solid 5 is still coming out, probably for the PS4, so I'm going to have to stick around for that.

If you have good memories of games gone by, then boot those bad boys up and have a nostalgia bath. Become a nostalgic "Retro-gamer" elitist! Maybe someday, you can even be MovieBob!:D

Seriously though, if you don't like the state of the modern gaming industry (and I don't blame you at all) then revel in its past glory.

*Addendum: (Since everyone else is doing it) LOL what? I'm 31 and I love me some gaming.

Since you want people to convince you to stay, you still like games deep down and don't want to leave. It just sounds like you need to stop talking with the bad part of the community and find a group that enjoys games for what they are rather than people who ***** that they aren't perfect.

If modern games annoy you go find some classics you missed the first time around. With the transition to new things is rough, if you stay behind the curve a lot of the things get ironed out (like constant updates) and if you don't like it at all, no one is forcing you to play them. I despise the AAA and pretentious indie scenes, but there are plenty of other games.

I'm 20 and I laughed my ass off at this.

OT: Stay if you want or not. It's supposed to be about fun and entertainment. If you're not having fun or aren't entertained, don't play games for a bit until it gets more interesting. If you make a thread asking people to convince you to stay, it sounds like you already want to and just have doubts.

You don't like console gaming. So switch to the pc! Ofcourse you dislike gaming if you are looking for quality games on consoles. You have to see the other side of the coin untill you dismiss the entire hobby.
Much as I don't like 'PC IS BEST', it does seem to be the only environment in which experimental and low-key games are allowed to flourish. Of course that wouldn't escape your remit because these are the games that can't really afford professional testing. But such is the cost of indie and low-budget development.

Some of my favourite experiences of recent years have been Don't Starve, FTL, Hotline Miami, Resonance, Machinarium etc etc. Completely eclipses the experiences of my youth, and I'm 21. Of course, my opinion would matter little to you, because the Bioshocks are some of my most beloved games ever ever.

and I can agree that you're probably doing yourself a disservice by listening to many people's opinions concerning gaming. Then again anything in society turns into a giant dick-measuring contest sooner or later.

If you like it, do it.

If you don't like it, then stop. I don't see the problem.
There will be no better answer than this in the whatever how many pages this gets to.

Maybe I've just gotten too old (I'm twenty)
lolwat?

Also, many of us leave hobbies alone for a while to get back into them, or not, people can change interests. And your problems seem to be relating to the toxic community, you don't need to participate in forums to be a gamer.

Sounds like you desperately need a new hobby, and more probably getting laid but hey that quest can be a hobby in itself.

The only reason we complain so much is because we care. :)

If we didn't we wouldn't bother at all.

I'm 31 and I've been gaming since I was 3/4 years old. Even if I moan about not being catered to as much as guys I still play games like a nutcase. The online gaming community gives me someone to talk about games to outside of my tiny northern English city. I would be lost without it.

Pls stay there are plenty of good things to look at.

Like survival horror games by Mikami the creator of Resident Evil http://www.siliconera.com/2013/05/02/the-evil-within-director-plans-on-bringing-the-horror-back-in-survival-horror/

ps. Buy a 3DS it's like awesome game time central.

Apparently I must be ancient as I'm 21.

Well, try going outside your comfort zone when it comes to the games you play. The AAA gaming scene isn't the only place to find games. I found Skullgirls, while having a bit of a learning curve, is incredibly fun to play. And this is coming from someone without much of a history in the fighting game scene. Plus I heard really good stuff about games like FTL and The Walking Dead.

Plus there's always playing a bunch of your older games.

Finally, I'd imagine taking a break from gaming forums might be a good idea. From my experience, while there is plenty of good stuff, they also come with a lot of the worse aspects of the gaming community. Like the constant flame wars about sexism and racism like you mentioned.

First of all you are not too old. You are twenty. You are still a kid. And you can't be "too old" for gaming. My dad gamed all the way up to his death at the ripe age of 70. So get over that particular idea. People who claim to be "too old" for gaming and such are just trying to justify a change in their own attitude by trying to demean whatever it is they claim to have "outgrown". Don't be that person.

Now, from your post it sounds like you're fed up with people bitching about gaming and are allowing it to affect your enjoyment of gaming. Don't do that either. Play what you like, when you like, how you like. I changed my gaming habits over the past several years as free time started to shrink and my tastes shifted, but that doesn't mean I feel the need to stop gaming. I just do it differently.

If you just don't feel like gaming, then don't, but don't try to "justify" it by claiming you "outgrew" it (if for no other reason then because it doesn't need justifying) and make sure you aren't abandoning a dear hobby simply because people on the internet are being dicks. That's a really lame reason to do anything... ;)

Why should we convince you to stay gaming? I get gaming people losing interest and soon give up on it altogether especially when work or family are involved.

I think if you're asking US to tell YOU why you'd want to stick around is because you want to stay already. You know it's YOUR choice to jump into annoying threads, or reply to smug people. Just don't do that and stick to lovely polls about how do you take your coffee, and conversations about games you liked. None of this works for you, maybe you should try starting your own threads about the stuff you'd like to discuss. Or just log in less frequently, I dunno. Is it such a big deal? It's just an internet chat forum. You can come and go as you please. You don't have any obligations to it.

I think I get where you're coming from - sometimes games get stale after awhile. I've had periods where I stopped playing games for months, but still checked gaming news sites for new concepts and technology.

Maybe you're right. Maybe it's time to take a break. Have you considered picking up any other hobbies? In my opinion, games actually pave the way for more (potentially) difficult/rewarding hobbies by teaching you what it takes to acquire a skill over time. Have you tried martial arts or archery? I'm planning on starting archery soon, and I hear the skill acquisition part of it is actually pretty similar to learning to coordinate a multiplayer FPS. I know that a technical martial art like BJJ was quite a bit like learning to play a complex video game. Or try learning how to cook, or build something cool.

Point is, if you feel like you're just spinning your wheels playing games, then you're probably right. Take some time off, reassess what you're doing, and try something different for awhile. You'll be back :)
