But yes, I too only know the reference thing from here. If I find cookies that fit the quote I award them, like Mario-cookie for Mario quote.
How about reference for referene? That seems just.

It makes me feel warm and fuzzy when people get a reference that make. I usually like to give them a nice cake or pie instead.
