The Golem Project was the effort, led by the United States, which resulted in the development of the first bipedal walking battle tanks during World War II. Research and production took place at more than 30 sites, some secret, across the United States. The principal site of the project was the weapons and armor R&D laboratory at at the Hanford Site in eastern Washington state. the mechs were completed and used heavily during Operation Downfall,also known as the invasion of Japan, unable to mount a truly effective resistance against the mechs but refusing to surrender the japanese fought on taking heavy casualties but doing absolutely no damage to the new super weapon. after the invasion and eventually pacification of japan 1 year later in the summer of 1946. plans for the Golems were stolen by Ethel Greenglass Rosenberg were American Jewish communists who were convicted and executed later that year for conspiracy to commit espionage during a time of war. The charges related to their passing information about project Golem to the Soviet Union.soon after the soviet union began design mechs of their own codenamed "General Winter" which eventually led to a cold war arms race with mechs taking the place of nuclear weapons as the preferred WMD.
