I think the cops could have used a better word for this incident other than "bizarre". How about tragic?

This situation seems dumb all around...

For the cops; I can see the reason for not wanting to identify yourself when trying to catch a potentially dangerous person. I can also see the reason for defending yourself against a person with a gun pointed at you. I cannot see any reason to go in like this when you are not 100% sure who is going to be answering the door. Seriously, the suspects motorcycle was parked outside? The police couldnt confirm who the home owner was in advance? maybe see that there was no connection to the suspect? Really sloppy play on the police side of things, and in the end they should be held fully accountable. As a county mind you, the individual officer acted in self defence and should not be punished for this (I am certain he is going through issues of his own for shooting the wrong person)

For the victim; Why would you answer your door with a gun? I understand that it was 1:30 am, but who did he think it was? Did he really think a criminal would be knocking at his door? Why didn't he look through a window or something if he was suspicious of who was there? If he was really worried that someone was gonna come in and start trouble, why didn't he call the police? why did he even open the door?

It is a shame that the man died, but this whole situation has stupid written all over it.

I thought officers were SUPPOSED to identify themselves in these situations.

"There's fault on both sides"

What!? I'm going to assume "knocking" on the door actually meant "banging" on the door. So the guy was opening the door to a stranger at 1:30 am in a city that has problems with crime according to quick Googling?

Well, I can't blame the deputies for shooting a man pointing a gun at them.

I can't blame him pointing at gun at random armed strangers that bang on his door at 1:30 in the morning.

I guess I can't blame them for not announcing themselves, and for assuming that the attempted murder suspect might be in the house with his bike out front.

But...the three of them were going after an attempted murder suspect, who's quite possibly armed? That sounds extremely unwise to me. If that happened here, I think they'd call out the TOU and go after him in force.

The cops should've identified themselves, but even if they had, I wouldn't blame the guy for either not answering the door, calling the cops, or doing exactly what he did. Anyone can bang on a door and yell "POLICE!" after all. How the fuck should the occupant know if it's actual police or not?

If someone was banging on MY door in the wee hours I'd be calling 911.
