I have recently gotten many new stations on my TV that play all of my favorite cartoons from when I was a kid. You know the ones:Batman, Superman, Spiderman, the X-men. Watching them again has lead me to the conclusion that we really have nothing to gain from superheros of any variety unless there is an equally matched villain to face them. Then I got to thinking: having some egomaniacal oddball in a costume might do some good for us. It would provide a common threat, uniting people in groups as small as neighborhoods to as large as nations, depending on the threat. It would remove from our society many of the needless debates such as the relevance of twitter and who really should have won the grammys. It could inspire people individually, to either nobility or villany. The world doesn't need a hero, it needs a villain!
What do you folks think? Is there a need for super-villany in todays world? How would we best fill this need, if it exists?
