My psychology teacher is one of those people who really hates heavy metal. He can't go a full class period without mentioning at least once that it's bad for you. He'll often refer to us as "cotton-pickin' metalheads!"

And I can deal with that, you know? Some people just don't like it.

But then he said something that sent me over the edge. I went to the Metallica concert in Charlottesville, Virginia and I had a lot of fun. It was insanely awesome. But then my professor mentions that a girl had disappeared at the concert, which is true (link at bottom). He agreed that this could happen anywhere, but then questioned why anyone would put themselves "in that situation".

I would.

I have class with him tomorrow and I plan on, before class begins, showing him my ticket and telling him that I went. I'm not doing this out of anger, but just to show him who he's preaching to. If he wants to discuss it, then so be it.

Also, I bought a package of KISS M&Ms which I'm going to leave on his podium with a note that reads, "TO: Dr._______, LOVE: Those Cotton-Pickin' Metalheads!"

So, for discussion:
What do you think of my ideas?
Do you have any teachers/professors like this, and if so, how have you dealt with them?

That's right, antagonize your teacher.

He may be ignorant, but he isn't unreasonable. I also believe he's capable of taking a joke.

what situation?

honestly?

going to a concert with their friends?

How many people have been killed/kidnapped at concerts in the past 40 years? a few thousand maybe? If that?

How many people have died crossing the street in the same timeframe?

Tell him that the phrase "cotton-pickin'" is racist... and most heavy metal isn't as blatantly racist as he is ( I will not say all because I'm sure there's some that is ) ... therefore he is honestly a worse person then someone who just likes a genre of music... or at least, more ignorant

Even though I despise metal it seems like your teacher hates it for all the wrong reasons and provoking him will not change his views in any way.

And really Cotton-pickin'? I live in the south and I've never heard anyone say that seriously, either he's using that phrase as a joke or your teacher is Huckleberry Hound.

Whoa, whoa, whoa.............whoa. Since when was that racist?

OP, I'd go for that, what your doing isn't to over the top to be offensive in really any way, but puts a point across.

I used to wrestle in Devon, a teacher asked me why, so I opened up the internetz on his machine (in the class room) and showed him, that's all I got.

http://www.phrases.org.uk//meanings/cotton-picking.html = basically racist ... it was a phrase before the whole "racist" thing...but but it was popularized as a racist term

The very fact that he used the term "cotton-picking" tells me that he must be a super cool guy. You should show him this video to convert him to metal:

Agree with Max.

He may be reasonable as you say but since when are ignorant people reasonable on topics of ignorance? Kind of why they are ignorant, also he if you fuck him around to much he might just fail you.

So why does he hate metal exactly? Is he simply hating it because, as has been stated above, he is ignorant. Or does he have a logical (remember that that is a matter of opinion) reason, like it screws with you ears because it is loud or something (yeah thats a bad example you can just turn it down). Or are we just assuming hes being ignorant, which would be funny.

I'll say the same thing I say every time I hear someone talking about exposure to risks:

Compare automobile fatalities in 2009 to concert disappearances in 2009. If your teacher doesn't want to expose himself to the latter risk he sure as hell doesn't want to expose himself to the former.

I would be careful about pissing off the guy who writes in the grade book. It can prove to be quite detrimental if you make him too angry.

Yeam Isn't cotton picking a racial slur for blacks.

Is he saying that black people are metal heads?

The situation where loads of people who don't really know each other gather in large numbers?
Like church, concerts, opera, nightclubs, schools, gyms, video game conventions.... the list of "situations like that" is almost endless, unfortunately, I don't have an endless deficit of things to do, so my typing time is limited.

It has been scientifically proven. Metal > Other genres of music.

To a few people...
I don't think he uses "cotton-pickin'" too seriously... he mostly uses it in jest.
He makes claims that metal stimulates the anger portions of your brain, which in turn is bad for your psychological health.

My rebuttal to his argument would be that not all metal is angry, and in fact a great deal of it is made with good intention.

People don't usually get to be ignorant by being reasonable, but I'll take your word for it.
He comes from a time when heavy metal was looked down upon because of its very nature. I guess he's old-fashioned. He's claimed to have done studies on the effects of music and has found metal very bad for you, but I'm convinced whatever music he used for these studies was limited.
