Could the Move help 360 increase the sales gap

Ever since Sony unveiled the Move, it's been considered by many as a cheap knock-off of the Wii. By contrast, Natal has generated a lot of positive hype (being demonstrated on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon and mentioned by Stephen Colbert on The Colbert Report) and is generally considered to be newer, more innovative, and more exciting.

Taking this into account, isn't it possible that, upon the release of these two motion control systems, the sales gap between the 360 and the PS3 will grow back to pre-Slim numbers? Over the last 8 months or so, Sony has really closed the gap, but this could really change things. People who want Natal will buy the 360 and people who want the Move will basically be able to get the same thing for less if they buy the Wii.

If you're looking at it purely from a sales perspective, there's one simple answer: They're both still going to lose to Nintendo. Badly. What's it even matter, at this point?

I'm more interested in finding out which is more fun to play. I'm hedging my bets on the Move at the moment, but that's really nothing more than speculation based on the appearance that the Move has something more than shallow, five-minute mini-games in mind.

They're both going to smack of Wii-ripoff, though. I can tell you that much right now.

I honestly don't care about the move and I'm a PS3 owner, as long as they continue making gamer's games I don't see it changing anything, it's just a slap on you'll either buy into or not.

Oh and....

Hype is hype, but Natal, amongst the gaming community, is just as much of a laughing stock as those lollipop wagging sticks Sony is trying to get us to buy. But, if I was forced to choose I'd rather be seated shaking a glowy stick at my TV than dance in front of it like a buffoon.

Both motion sensors = fail...

I hate motion sensors altogether, I play games to relax, moving around like a retard does not sound like relaxed.

When I first saw the Move trailer I actually laughed. Not only does it act like the Wii (anyone notice a 'Link' ripoff in that trailer?) it also looks like the Wii controller.

Its basically using the same type of games as the Wii (boxing, golf, tennis, archery) which is why Im skeptical of Sony, as they seem to be doing what they always do, Exhibit A:

*New tech comes out, wows everyone by being a step forward and innovative*

*Some time later, Sony looks at said tech and copies it, but markets it as 'new*

Some examples include: Shoulder Buttons (first seen on the SNES) Analog Stick (N64) Rumble Features (Again N64) Trophies (Xbox360 Achievements anyone?)

At least with Natal it looks a lot sleeker, and it does seem to be innovative and moving the industry forward. Having looked at the trailers, we are basically talking AI type config here.

Sorry, but Move for me is a Fail.

I've seen/heard of report from inside the industry that Natal at this point is technologically inferior to the Move. That's not to say that it won't vastly improve before the release 6~8 months from now. People say that it's buggy, laggy, and prone to picking up the wrong targets. Move has the problem of having lag time of a frame or so (I suspect that Natal also has this problem, and probably contributes to the reports of it being laggy). This is basically not fix-able (you could minimize it through predicting player movements and increasing the frame rate on the Eye), and places a limitation on the effectiveness of Move. This was also a problem for the Wii, and we've bitched about it before.

In terms of technological potential, I think that Natal and Move are about on par. The Move is basically a good version of the Wii. The decision to place the camera on the Wii-mote instead of the sensor bar one of the most idiotic ideas ever. Move fixes this, and also has the Augmented Reality ability, which takes that beyond Wii territory. Natal is basically Move without the sticks and balls, which is possibly both good and bad. Good because there's no controller at all, so if the MS marketing people are right, will open the door to more users. Bad because that places a huge limitation on developers, and the lack of any analog sticks or buttons will probably keep most traditional games off it completely.

My take is that the Move will probably be like the PS3. It'll start out like shit, until some first/second part dev figures out how to utilize it's full potential and produce something insanely good. Then it'll catch on a little bit, but never be really successful. Natal will sell well because of all the hype, and then most gamers will go back to using the X360 controllers. Both motion controls will basically be for Wii owners who want to upgrade, and likely end up as gimmicks.

As for Sony copying ideas, I actually prefer that to Sony coming up with their own stuff. Sony is likely the WORST major hardware designers there is (a size-able percentage of their hardware has been uber-fail). But they don put out some pretty kick-ass gaming software, and have the best line-up of first party devs with a whole lot of financial backing. So perhaps their devs can take this Wii-rip-off much farther than what the Nintendo devs have been able to do (which, in my opinion, is not much).

I don't know that I'd be this harsh about it, but motion sensing is inimical to the way I want to play games.

natal isnt moving the industry "forward" as you say. its just copying something else, that playstation made. what was it? oh yes, the playstation eye
The Playstation eye was basically a webcam with a little bit of interactivity. Could you honestly tell me more than 12 people who played the Eyetoy seriously, as a gaming peripheral?

I have used microsoft's own version of the Eyetoy (also a webcam by definition) as well as the Eyetoy itself and both were terrible, laggy and generally not fun in the slightest to play.

Dictionary reference of 'innovation':

Noun: something new or different introduced.

New? A webcam wasnt new in 2004 (when the Eyetoy was released in Japan)

OK! How is it a cheap knock off of the wii, when it has better accuracy and is compatible with a wider range from games. Everything from SOCOM to Little big Planet? Natal was blasted by press who ever given a preview, they said and i quote "you'll be exhausted and the novelty wears off quickly" (article is on the escapist). Colbert was making fun of it he said "now if you have a skateboard and the skill to ride a skateboard...you no longer have to ride a skateboard"

How will they get the same thing if they buy the wii? all you get are Mario, Zelda, Metroid sequels...if you can call them that. PS3 has GoW, Killzone, SOCOM, GTA, Modern Warfare, Seteroscopic 3D gaming and far superior graphics and PSN!

EDIT: Natal is unique? Its a more advanced version of PS Eyetoy, just as Move is an advanced and better version of Wii. Nothing is original

WOW! he just DESTROYED your argument. And i saw that colbert report episode too, he was making fun of it, not saying how fun it is...BIG difference.

Plus i think this thread is just wishful 360 fanboism hidden under a thin veil

weird, i play games to have fun...
Gaming is an escape from reality and a chance to enjoy yourself without the stress of some aspects in life, much like any other hobby, therefore it can be a form of relaxation to some.

I wouldn't call it a ripoff, considering swords and shields a very, very common in games as are sword-fighting stances

I think Natal has the potential to bring more of the casual crowd from the Wii over to the 360. It is new and exciting where the Move is a black Wiimote.

Yes it will increase the sales. But Natal might do the same thing, so it's pretty much even.

Calumon: Wheee! Moving!
