Countdown Shows

So right now I am watching The Smoking Gun on TruTV. For those who don't know, it's a countdown show that shows, well, countdown lists. I realized that I don't even notice the numbers attached to each clip. I thought back to other countdown shows, and also realized I remember the clips, but never the order. So, does anyone actually pay attention to those countdown numbers, or do you just focus on each clip individually and not care?

I feel that the numbers are important because they show what people are/were really into at that point in time. Let's say there is a music countdown, but somehow, you've never heard of the number one song listed. The fact that it has been rated so highly may cause you to look into it more than if it had just been slapped onto your TV screen. I think this may be a con by the media in order to make us purchase more songs to be with the "in crowd," and I also think it's working...
