Countdown Timer Hints at New Carmageddon

Do my eyes deceive me, or is that a countdown to a new Carmageddon game I see?

A little history lesson for you kids out there. In 1997, Stainless Games, SCi and Interplay came out with Carmageddon [http://www.amazon.com/Carmageddon-Pc/dp/B00001QEP6/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1305910981&sr=8-1], "the racing game for the chemically imbalanced," in which victory could be earned by being the first across the line, destroying the other cars in the race or killing every pedestrian in the level. And they killed real good, let me tell you, with plenty of blood, guts and splatter on the windshield. A few countries [we're looking at you, Germany] actually censored the game, turning the pedestrians into zombies that spurted green liquid when hit, or banned it outright.

Controversy aside, it was also stupid amounts of fun, with big, open sandbox levels and optional victory conditions that let you race, crash or kill as you saw fit. It was good enough to spawn a couple of sequels, Carmageddon TDR 2000 [http://www.amazon.com/Carmageddon-2-Carpocalypse-Now-Pc/dp/B00004SWKG/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1305910981&sr=8-2] a couple of years later, but a planned Carmageddon 4 was canceled and that, sadly, was the end of the series. Until now! (Maybe.)

If you will turn your attention to Carmageddon.com [http://www.carmageddon.com/], you will notice a countdown timer, currently down to 11 days, 15 hours and change. What happens when it hits zero? I have no idea but I assume it will involve a catastrophic coming-together of 600 screaming horses and an old lady with a walker. And it will be awesome!

It could be something else, I suppose, but I can't imagine what. I will also take this moment to say that if it turns out to be a top-down iOS-exclusive game, I am going to be supremely disappointed. We'll keep you posted!

I remember having the first game when I was like 12? Always wondered why the people suddenly turned into zombies, thought the game broke like 3 weeks in. xD

OT: Interested to see what the new game might be like if it does come out.

My GOD.

I have played the hell out of the first one and even MORe out of the second one.
They were some awesome games, let me tell you that! Haven't really bothered with the third though.
But no matter, I'm quite sure that IF this is true, the carnage will be back and with a vengeance! :D

A new Carmageddon eh? That game sure is a blast from the past. Not sure I'm looking forward to it, honestly. I've got the feeling I sort of matured past it. Mind you, I like some of my games gory (go go L4D2), but Carmageddon's violence and gore, in hindsight, felt so very very pointless.

I mean, what did those pedestrians ever did to you eh? Why bother going out of your way to run them over? And it wasn't like you got punished for it like in GTA (get the coppers on your tail), instead you got points. If any anti-videogame nut starts ranting on this potential new game when it comes out or gets announced, I honestly can't blame it. Doesn't really put the medium in a good light now does it?

Never heard of this game before but I assume it's responsible for the old joke of "you just hit an old lady...50 points!" that the news media uses with such gusto every time a violent game comes out?

I can already hear the media frenzy building and I think the fox news writers jittering with excitement.

Meh, fuck 'em. the industry can take care of itself. This whole notion that one pointlessly gory and violent game is going to screw over this medium is getting a little stale to be honest. The people who are going to be offended are the same people who have relentlessly been attacking video games with their ignorant rhetoric.

Awesome. I loved the first Carmageddon, it was great. Sequels were rubbish but oh well. A modern Carmageddon with new graphics in true 3D (the first one used the Build engine also used in Duke Nukem 3D which is really only a 2.5D engine) would probably be banned where I live but it would potentially be awesome enough to be worth circumventing said ban.

Have to wonder where it would get its appeal from though in a post-GTA gaming world...

Oh yeah. Extremely good news!
I didn't play the first one, but played the everliving crap out of the second one. Loved it so much. So many fun memories, crazy races, splatters...
Though i have to say, I never actually finished the race when there was an opinion of smashing all the other racers to bits.
Oh my god what a great game it was...
TDR was somewhat of a disappointment, in my opinion. It was nice and all, but not on a level that Carma 2 was.
So now I hope they'll be saying a new game is coming, and it will be super-awesome.

Carmageddon 2 was one of the greatest games EVER. Unfortunately they took the crappiest parts, the missions, and made them the whole game in TDR.

The best part about C2 was killing all the other drivers except 1, tipping the guy up on his side, then racing around the whole level for 30 minutes killing people as creatively as possible.

Pinball mode inside the mall!

Awriiight.
Me and my cousin managed to glitch a train in one of the games (don't remember which, it's been close to 7 years since then), making it run on invisible rails in an endless loop from the sky to the ground. His girlfriend (the she beast) and her friends were sitting in the same room as us chatting while we laughed our asses off. :D

That's not what I'm saying. I'm saying that in this case I just find it hard to disagree with them, as much as I loved the first Carmageddon as a kid.

And I'm not saying it's 'screwing over' the medium either, I'm just saying it'd put us in a negative daylight. Again. And for once, I can't really come up with an argument against them. In this case, mind you.

Well, that quote could possibly be from the 70's movie Death Race, which Carmageddon, Death Rally and several other car combat/racing games were inspired by. Carmageddon was the closest to the source material though, both in visual style and the points system.
It had 3 ways to win a race - finish first, kill all other drivers, or kill all the 400+ pedestrians on the map. And it had awesome damage modeling. Wonderful times.

Sweet!!! Carpocalypse Now is one of my earliest memories of gaming, so early in fact that I can only really associate the Carmageddon games with pure fun, as opposed to recalling much about them...
