Countdown to Infinite Crisis

So, yeah. After reading Crisis on Infinite Earths and massively enjoying it, I wanted to check out the Final Crisis series that a lot of fans have told me is actually quite good. But then I noticed this huge Countdown series leading into it. Then I noticed how there's a bunch of books leading into that. And so on and so on. So what I'm asking here is what are essential books to read to fully understand what's going on in the Countdown Series? I have the Death of the New Gods, as well as Rann-Thanagar War, and I think I have Day of Vengeance, but what else should I read to fully get what's going on? Because as it stands Countdown to Infinite Crisis is making my head spin just a bit. (Seriously, who the hell is OMAC?)

Countdown? Based on what I've heard, and I've ONLY heard Linkara's review of it, it sucks. All of it. Except the gorilla fighting robots in space.

I don't know if that's helpful or not.

But I believe Linkara did say that Final Crisis was pretty good, just that Countdown suuuuuucks. BIG TIME. I'd read a summary on wikipedia and skip it if I were you. But again, I've ONLY seen Linkara's review of it.

Also, Countdown to Infinite Crisis and Countdown to Final Crisis are two different things. It sound to me like you're talking about Countdown to Final Crisis because you describe it as a huge series. Countdown to Infinite Crisis was just a one-off.

I read Final Crisis without reading any Countdown before it. Didn't have any problems.
