I will start this off by saying that i enjoy online FPS games. I play Halo 3, CoD4, and sometimes i'll give UT a go. Now, i consider myself good at FPS games. Not great, not spectacular, just good. A little above average. But then i came across CSS. Needless to say, it put me in my place... And the place it put me was a living hell.

Right when you join a game, you start in a "buy zone". You are able to browse a menu for various weapons or other useful items that may come in handy (Kevlar, flashbangs, frags, nightvision, etc). After that, you proceed to attempt to wipe out the other team (There are objectives for each game, but i rarely see them followed). Instantly you will hear the sound of the magnum sniper rifle firing off from every direction.

Now, in my expirience in CSS,there are 3 types of players. There are noobs. Cannon fodder. Useless piles of shit that go 1 - 25 before leaving the game. Then there are those "middle of the road" CSS players who know what theyre doing to some extent, and can play the game without being killed every 14.7 seconds. Then, theres "them". The players who drove me against CSS. The amazing "holy shit" players. The players who devote every waking hour of their lives to CSS. The players who can snipe a perfect headshot across the map while reloading his pistol in midair doing a triple sideflip over a flaming pit of snakes. Ok, so maybe thats a little bit of an understatement, but needless to say, they are way too good (and if you are wondering, i fell in the first category of CSS players).

I spent most of my time playing CSS in the "spectator" mode (the mode you enter after you are killed and forced to wait the rest of the round before respawning), so i had a great chance to catch the "holy shit" players in action. I watched as these players tore apart their enemies. I was in utter shock when i saw half the shit they pulled off. I had no idea a human could have such quick reaction times and precise aim to hit a target across the map with a sniper rifle after seeing him for less than a second (which is usually how i was killed). Half the time, i wondered if a hacker could do half as good as the players i saw.

My thing against CSS, too many people are too good at it for me. I dont stand a chance, and if your new to CSS, you wont stand a chance. The only thing you'll get out of the game (other than endless rape) is the fact that most people have their custom sparypaints set to some sort of porn, so at least you can get a good wank out of it while your waiting to respawn in spectator mode.

CSS is fun. If you want to get better you should try "Mixing" with 4 other people in 5on5 practice matches. Or, just spend about 7 hours straight on a deathmatch server everyday from now until you go mentally insane from the "Fire in the hole!" phrase uttered every 5 seconds over the in-game radio. :]

Counter Strike: Condition Zero is made for new player to learn the maps and weapons in a single player environment. If you are new to Counter Strike, try this first. People have been plying this game for many years and should be good at it by now. There is a steep learning curve but most people find a comfortable niche after a while.

I agree with Condition Zero; its a nice way to ease into the Counter Strike feel, and once you've beat that then hone your skills in online servers.

If you're ACTUALLY willing to dedicate the time and effort at being good at Counter Strike, anyway.
