Hello guys/gals, Joe here from ol' New Zealand.

Just bought a new gaming pc, as I needed to upgrade and I did not like PS3 multiplayer!

Now, I started Counter Strike Source up, and thought, hey I've never actually played this properly before. I'll give it a chance... play some TD and some CTF etc etc.

WOW.... I suck... ARSE!

What do I need to do, to get half way decent? Can someone please explain why out of 30 servers I went to, none were "serious" in the sense of level design. They were all weird levels created by players I presume.

I had a lot more fun with HL2's multiplayer to be honest, (and a lot more success XD)

But, alas, I want to give CS a chance so here are my questions.

-What can I do to better myself, and what guns are beneficial?
-What servers should I practice on? What should I look for?
-Can someone explain the different modes that aren't CTF or Deathmatch, because I'm a bit confused?

Thanks for your time, and effort guys/girls. Also share with me some of your best kills! :)

-Joe (New Zealand)

Ah, I suck at the game but there is one tip that helped me suck slightly less. One way to get kills at a decent range with the AK-47 is to aim just below the head, at the chest/high sternum, and fire three semi-auto shots. If you do it right it is quite effective and the third shot is often a fatal headshot.

There's a whole lot to learn at the start of this game, once you start mixing there's even more, so don't get put off by a difficult start. Some decent tips when you are starting out can be found here: http://www.nextlevelgamer.com/

what guns are beneficial?
Don't spend time learning all the guns. When it comes down to it, the only real guns worth learning are the m4, the ak, the awp and the deagle. Learning to use the ak is the most valuable, because although it is more difficult to control than the m4 it is a 1 headshot kill whether or not they have a helmet.

What can I do to better myself?
First off, don't try to fire while moving. You will hit almost nothing that way. Come to a complete stop before you fire. If you are strafing and you tap the opposite strafe key you will stop moving very quickly.

A thing that puts a lot of new players off is the recoil. If you begin to spray, the bullets will end up going far above your crosshair, which can be disconcerting at first. If you concentrate on burst fire, readjusting your aim after every burst and only spraying at really close range you can avoid this mostly.

What servers should I practice on? What should I look for?
Deathmatch servers of about 16-22 people are a good place to practice your aim, as you get a lot of new targets in very quick succession. I would avoid really large public servers, as no matter how well you are playing you will eventually be cut down by someone wasdaing with a p90. Smaller servers allow you to use your skill better, and rely less on luck.

Practicing on "aim_" can help you get your aim up to speed, but if you are quite a new player you'll probably find you'll get destroyed by good players who are practicing before league matches, etc., so you might want to avoid them to start off.

Can someone explain the different modes that aren't CTF or Deathmatch, because I'm a bit confused
In "de_" maps, e.g. "de_dust2", the terrorists try to plant the bomb at one of the two bombsites, and the counter terrorists try to stop that from happening, by killing all the terrorists or defusing the bomb

"cs_" maps are hostage rescue, the counter terrorists must rescue all hostages or kill all terrorists.

Best way to improve would be to find some friends to play with who are semi-decent at the game and play with them and watch them when they die. Watching good players will help you learn from your mistakes far more quickly. Common sense comes into it a lot, I mean if you get awped every time you try to go through a door, you should stop going there.

Keep at the game, it's hard at first, but it's damn fun when you learn how to do the basics and start to improve :)

If you want to see just how insane some players push the skill boundaries of this game, look up some frag movies from this thread: http://www.cadred.org/Forums/Thread/78388/

http://www.source-movies.com/movie/view/67 some insane kills in there.
