the reason behind that was quite horrifying, the sailors knew well and good that they were having sex with giant underwater cow but for some reason the genitals of the female manatee are very similar to a human females so if i sailor was questioned about it they would talk about a beautiful creature with the body of a woman but the tail of a fish, it was mostly to prevent them from looking like pervy freaks to their friends.
