A defunct pirate group called Myth, with their ASCII logo has been found in the source code for the max payne 2 distributed by steam. This version allows the user to play the game without the disc.

Knowing this...would you buy a cracked game?

I'm not sure I get it... why buy a cracked (hacked) game when you can download it for free? If you're going to buy a game, might as well be a legit copy. Plus, Steam games never require a disk. Whether or not there's a "crack" in the Steam version, you're still paying for the game and still don't need a disc so what does the crack even do?
EDIT: Ok so Rockstar used the crack to save themselves the trouble. Hmm... well, I don't really see the issue since it has to be modified somehow, right?

No, because I actually own a copy on disc.
Exactly this.

I'm happy with dusting off my Xbox to pop in a copy of Max Payne.

I only played the first Max Payne... And as far as I remember, it was pretty sweet.

Still, games that require you to have a CD to play them are pretty lame. I either have to move the CD onto excess memory and use daemon tools or, you know, redownload cracked versions because it's unlikely I could find some of the older games again in most stores and I wouldn't be willing to pay for them twice anyways.

Also, games on Steam kinda don't need a CD anyways -_-
That's, kinda, one of the main advantages to the whole "steam" thing.

The real question is whether the creators are still getting money for it. Beyond that it's just ethical masturbation.

But yeah, this is good. I hear this happened with a Ubisoft game a while back too, relating instead to the pirate group Reloaded. Think it was Rainbow 6: Vegas or something.

Quite a few developers have released a crack as part of a patch to the public before. Cracks that pirates make get used down the line when the copyright protection is lifted.

Less common nowadays though with everyone raging about DRM all the time.

So we can play our ONLINE PURCHASES without a disc?
The thing is (since I saw the topic about that on Steam site earlier) that it seems rockstar has just been lazy :p.
To play a game you have bought and downloaded through the internet (for example steam) it needs to be "tweaked" a bit by the developers so that it does not require the cd to play.
It would kinda suck if you bought (for example) Modern Warfare 2 over the internet, downloaded it and than was asked to "Inserd an original copy of the disc" right? :p That's why they need to switch it a little.

The crack group doesn't exist anymore, but can this mean anything for any legal charges made against this group?
Or any crack group for that matter?

Considering that this has been thrown up [http://www.gog.com/en/forum/general/gog_arcanum_release_uses_warez_scene_crack] a couple of times [http://www.gog.com/en/forum/general/gog_uses_crack_to_remove_flatout_amp_039_s_protection] over at GOG, I'm going to join the "meh" camp.

LOL GoG... that makes it cool!!! No, sorry.

It is amazing how Rockstar gets so upset about pirates yet steal code themselves.
