You can't beat the patch, and if the people running the servers are tech savvy enough then they can avoid direct IP detection.

I don't think so. The crack allows you to play a legally purchased version of a game without extra software running in the background. The escapist has a no-piracy policy, and as no sales are lost by this crack I think it is in line with it.
