Creepiest Non-Horror Games (Possible Spoilers)

killer7. Every single enemy in the game is invisible, has lizard skin, cackles incessantly, has a huge, tooth filled grin, and blows up when they touch you. Not too mention the talking severed head, the ghosts of all your previous victims that show up to haunt/offer advice to you, and the plethora of bodies that just won't stay dead...

Somehow i think a lot of games that aren't trying to be horror, but merely creepy succeed a lot better in freaking people out.

My pick here's gotta be Major's Mask though. It wasn't only 'cause i was a kid when i first played it, but because some parts of that game are genuinely creepy. Like the earlier examples in this thread about Ikana Canyon. Also the underwater place with all the eels and the zora eggs was just unsettling.

I know, another stupid pretentious art browser based game. Yeah? Wait until you get to the level where everything's flooding, and the way out isn't obvious. Or the one in which you're blind.

The STALKER series isn't strictly horror either and yet it's probably the most intense experience I've played in recent years. Just recently played Call of Pripyat and I'd be lying if I said I didn't have a few moments of silent intensity and chair-jumping surprise. Damned Snorks & Bloodsuckers.

For me, the main reason it got to me was that I wasn't expecting any scariness. Then I went down into a bunker to kill some mercenaries, and it was dark, and I had only my torch, and all was quiet AND THEN THERE WAS AN INVISIBLE THING RUNNING TOWARDS ME.

I will also add the Sewer level from Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire. There were things in the water. Hungry, tentacled things.

Oh, and also the Mooshoo Pork level in Gex on the N64. I had to stop playing the game for a while, it terrified me so. This horrifying human/pig hybrid chasing you around and around.

I think Arkham Asylum is pretty high up there.

I can't shake a sort of The Suffering vibe off this game. You have little things like Zazz posing corpses at a card table, peek-a-boo with Killer Croc... however quickly the novelty of that may wear off, and the infamous Scarecrow sequences.

I found the old PSX game, Galerians, to have a couple of pretty freaky moments. Especially the big twist towards the end and just the overall thing with having this young kid killing people in horrible ways, and pumping himself full of all sorts of different drugs, all in an effort to just survive. Plus it left you with some weird musings about what exactly makes you, well, You.

Then there's also Parasite Eve, which, when it came out, kinda weirded me out a bit.

Fallout: New Vegas definately had some creepy areas especially if you start going through the vaults and reading the termials. Vault 22 in particular is very creepy.

TF2, that game has made me jump more than any other game, just because sometimes I run around a corner and god damn, people pointing guns at me! of course that may just be me being jumpy.

Maybe not whole games, but definitely some areas. The two that I remember the most are Atlantis in Tomb Raider and the Dunwich building in Fallout 3.

Although I suppose it isn't as scary as it used to be :/ but back in the Beta 1.3 days shit was terrifying xD

Also, when I was a kid (like... 8 or something xD), the boss in the toy area of Donkey Kong 64 made me scream and run out the room... my mum beat it for me >.>

Oh hell yes. I know just which parts you're referring to. Scared fuck out of me. I have a save game in Thief 3 just before the main scary part, been waiting til I can get a night alone in the house to play through it again. There'll be no sleep for me that night, I can tell you.

OT: I'll go with Lylat wars(Star fox 64), the hard route with the true fight against Andross... kinda took me by surprise.

Creepies non horror games ? Resident Evil always took me on the weak spot ;/ But Bioshock in the morgue was the worst moment for me as much as i loved that game (worst = most terrifying)

Parts of dead space are downright unnerving, for example the first time you see the flying parasite thingy latch onto someone and turn them into a necromorph or the time when you are in that semi dark room (I forget which chapter this was) with the necros stalking outside just before they burst in. Scary stuff!

I am not far enough into the sequel to judge yet, but there is a mother cradling a necromorph baby at one point. Thats just freaky!!

Condemned: Bloodshot is arguably not a horror game, but has a couple of REALLY effective spooky bits. The one that really stands out in my mind is moving through an apparently-abandoned apartment building, you come across a room filled with mannequins. As you exit the room, there's a noise behind you, and if you turn around, you find that ALL THE MANNEQUINS HAVE MOVED and are now standing in a semicircle, facing you... about 18 inches away from you. It literally made the hair on my arms stand up.

Another not-quite-horror title is Manhunt. It has Piggsy. DEAR GOD PIGGSY. Naked, obese dude wearing a rotting pig head on his face, stalks you with a chainsaw.

its mostly climbing stuff, avoiding traps, and getting past open doors in X amount of time.

but often enemies catch me off guard, it makes me jump a bit.
