You know that's just a figure of speech, right? People who use it aren't really asking if they are the only one, but are just seeking validation for their opinion.
First off, I'm sure there are some people actually asking if they're the only one because they think their opinion is that out of the norm. This is the internet after all. Secondly, there are much better ways to ask the same sort of thing that won't lead to a thread being derailed or people pointing out they aren't the only one.

I laughed at the comic.. but the phrase "am i the only one..." shouldnt necesarily invalidate the rest of the question... i'd wager less than half the people who say that dont really believe they are the only one, and instead they're actually saying in a round about way: I am the only person i know who ---, do you also ---?
Or, you know, they could just ask 'who elses here ---' instead of saying something just for exaggerated effect or because they honestly think they have that special of an opinion. Many of them are ones that I would be incredibly surprised if they're even the only ones who are effected like the way they're asking. Like the 'Am I the only one not excited for' threads. Unless you only know people who love gaming or whatever else, I'm willing to bet you know someone who isn't excited for something.

Like the other guy you quoted said.. its a figure of speech and people need to calm the hell down about it. I agree that its overly used by people who really only want to draw attention because they have used a phrase everyone hates.. but seriously if people just ignored them it would go away.

Am I the only one who realises that 'Am I the only one' is obviously a rhetorical question, not meant to be taken literally? Like saying 'everyone' likes something else.

I'm not entirely sure why everyone on this site freaks the fuck out whenever someone says 'Am I the only one...?'. It's a figure of speech that's meant to elicit conversation! Jesus!

Let me try it another way...
I doubt I'm the only one who thinks that Erin's legs are really long here and that the close-up is creepy.
I doubt I'm the only one who might be thinking creepy thoughts about that because of obsessive tendencies.

...It's a figure of speech. For fucks sake.
The issue that people take with that figure of speech here is how often it's used. It's become sort of a semi-meme on the Escapist by now, simply due to the fact that most people would word their thread titles in that way for a while - I've seen a whole load of threads which have started with "am I the only one who...". It's like whenever something becomes vastly popular and everyone starts saying it everywhere, regardless of how often other people have used it. It's just sort of frustrating to see the same phrase being used over and over and over again.

And there are also much bigger and more worthy things to get your panties in a knot about than how someone chooses to phrase a question. And quite frankly sometimes it can certainly feel like you're the only one has a certain opinion despite how much logic and common sense tell you otherwise!

The fact that this comic is called "Highlanders Anonymous" makes me think that people only post those threads for the sake of finding the other highlanders. As we all know, the mark of a highlander is thinking Call of Duty is overrated.

Am I the only one...ah! I get it.

At first, I didn't get the comic. But after looking at a few comments from other members, now I do.

Am I the only one who notices that there seems to be three types of people on this thread:

1. People bawwwing because Erin called them a clown

2. People trying to make the universe implode upon itself through massive amounts of being 'meta'

3. A few of you fapping to Erin for some reason
