So last week, I got an Assignment in my AP Language class to write about how any two essays we've read so far fulfil Faulkner's "Writer's Duty." So I'm skipping school today because if I don't have the assignments (there are more) ready for class, my teacher will crucify me. I'm having serious trouble thinking what to write so I come to you with hopes of hearing constructive criticism. I'll post more when I get there.

In William Faulkner's acceptance speech, he outlined the what he believed was the writer's duty, to inspire feelings like honor, compassion and sacrifice. Barack Obama's Inauguration Speech and "Labour" by Thomas Carlyle seek to affect a desire for work and compel people to rise above their struggles, which fulfills the idea that a writer should spur humanity to greatness.

Carlyle wrote in "Labour" that all people should work, regardless of the nature, and that it would not only provide them with mere means to live but also happiness. He wrote that all negative feelings can be abolished if one simply devotes himself to a task, no matter how small. "Labour" explained that through work, man can perfect himself, and only through work can any progress be achieved. Carlyle sought to create feelings of pride and honor in the idle when they endeavored to find some way to work.

Furthermore, "Labour" stated people work for something greater, and this idea is shared in Obama's speech. Obama said the United States has endured because its citizens were able to set aside their problems and strive to improve this nation. We have to overcome the obstacles like a staggering economy and create new jobs. We have to let go of our differences and dedicate ourselves to our tasks instead of waiting for someone else to do what needs to be done. The problms we are facing cannot be mastered merely by complaining. Only by a genuine effort will we be able to grow and prosper. By commiting ourselves to this cause, our country will be able to continue to improve and will be a better place for those who come after us. Obama's speech was meant to inspire hope in the American people, to give us bolster us and give us the endurance we need to meet the challenges we face today.

Another sentiment shared by Obama and Carlyle is that through determination humanity Can overcome any problem. In the Inauguration Address Obama spoke about how our previous generations faced challenges greater than our own, yet they endured and prospered. "Labour" described how by our efforts mankind can clear any hurdle.

Good, but what's your thesis? This is an essay, right? After a while I figured out that you're comparing the speeches, but you need an intro or something along the lines of:

"Speeches can inspire many people to do almost anything. Recently, President Barack Obama used a speech that inspired many people. However while the speech was new, it's concepts were not. Barack Obama, consciously or not, used elements and ideas from both William Faulkner's acceptance speech and "Labour" by Thomas Carlyle."

I haven't checked the above paragraph for spelling errors or even revised it, but it would help to have a nice intro and a thesis (in bold).

Writing a good thesis has been something I always sucked at.

You and me both.

But, isn't asking people online for advice kind of...weird?

I don't know.
Maybe it's just because I like to look at hard copies of almost everything.

Sometimes I even print out my e-mails.

ah well now - you didn't say that, you just said you print stuff out, stuff that most people dont print. If there was no reason for it other than you had an affinity for paper then that would be weird, but seeing as you doing it on "medical" grounds that's entirely different.
I spend my life avoiding paper - other than real books.

SMILE JESUS LOVES ME! School got cut short due to snow, just before that class started. If it sticks I get another day to work.
Or slack off and play Planetside...

Comeon, procrastination is bad. I already have my sources for a paper due at the end of March.
You have been afforded a meager luxury of extra time, so do it.

Random Thought 262:
While I was working on this paper, I started watching the speech hoping that seeing it would help my process. From the back of my mind I remembered a conversation with a friend from a few months ago where he said "Obama is such a great speaker." Thought crossed my mind today, "So was Hitler..."

Done.
In William Faulkner's acceptance speech, he outlined what he believed was the writer's duty. A writer's mission is toinspire feelings like courage, honor, hope, pride, compassion, pity, and sacrifice. Barack Obama's InaugurationSpeech and "Labour" by Thomas Carlyle both seek to affect a desire for work and compel people to rise above theirstruggles, which fulfills the Faulkner's idea that a writer should spur humanity to greatness.

Carlyle wrote in "Labour" that all people should work, regardless of the nature. He asserted that it would not onlyprovide them with mere means to live but also happiness and satisfaction that can not be achieved just by wastingtime away.He wrote in paragraph three "...even even in the meanest sorts of Labour, the soul of a man is composed into a real kind of harmony..." All negative emotions can be abolished if one simply devotes himself to a task, no matter how small orinsignificant. "Labour" explained that through work, man can perfect himself, and only through work can any progress be achieved. Carlyle sought to create feelings of pride and honor in the idle when they endeavored to find some
way to work.

Furthermore, "Labour" stated humankind works for something greater, and this idea is shared in Obama's speech.Obama said the United States has endured because its citizens were able to set aside their problems and strive to improve this nation. Obama said in paragraph ten, "In reaffirming the greatness of our nation, we understand that greatness is never given. It must be earned. We have to overcome the obstacles like a staggering economy and
create new jobs. We have to let go of our differences and dedicate ourselves to our tasks instead of waiting for someone else to do what needs to be done. The problems we are facing cannot be mastered merely by sitting back and wallowing in our misery. Only by a genuine effort will we be able to grow and prosper. By committing ourselves to this cause, our country will be able to continue to improve and will be a better place for those who come after us. Obama's speech was meant to inspire hope in the American people, to bolster our resolve and give us the courage we need to meet the challenges we face today.

Another sentiment from Obama is that through determination humanity can overcome any problem. In the Inauguration Address Obama spoke about how previous generations faced challenges greater than our own, yet they endured and flourished. He described how by our efforts mankind can clear any hurdle. Obama said in paragraph elven "For us, they packed up their few worldly possessions and traveled across oceans in search of new life. For us, they toiled in sweatshops and settled the West; endured the lash of the whip and plowed hard fields." These things show how our country has faced challenges and come out the stronger for it. America was founded under harsh conditions, but it survived. It grew into a superpower, a symbol of the Western world. The sacrifices made by the people who came before us have shaped history.

In conclusion, both "Labour" by Thomas Carlyle and Barack Obama's Inauguration Address satisfy the writer's duty as outlined by William Faulkner. Both encourage us to work and to improve life not only for ourselves but for those around us. Every individual can be productive and propel humanity further. They stimulate pride in people when they work, strengthen us with hope, give us the courage we need to make the sacrifices necessary in bringing our country into a better, more prosperous future. These examples rouse a desire for greatness, which Faulkner believed was the most important goal for any writer.
