After reading a few threads about people bad mouthing game series A or video game B, I thought I might try a thread about criticism.

This isn't a flame thread, this isn't about antagonizing bad games or games that are overrated. To understand what is good, we need to come to terms with what is bad, so here's our chance.

Pick either one or two of your favorite games of all time. Name a couple of critical problems with them (be tasteful) and then praise them.

The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time is rather formulaic and repetitive. All the dungeons follow this path:

1. Go to town A.
2. Find a person or item A that helps you progress.
3. Use item A to enter a nearby dungeon.
4. Fight through said dungeon using item A and fight boss monster A for a different item B.
5. Go back through the dungeon and use item B to open doors you couldn't previously open.
6. Fight boss monster B for magical mcguffin plot device thingy.
7. Exit dungeon and go to the next one.

Now this formula can be followed for EVERY SINGLE Zelda game. And OOT is essentially a 3D remake of Zelda: A link to the past.

But you know what? It works and its really fun. The areas are nice and varied, the story is compelling, and the game, although pretty easy, does present a nice challenge (especially if you're doing a 3-heart run).

Your turn!
You could of critised that game with only four words.

Navi and that Owl.

Hmm.... How can I criticize a game that I love so much....
Well, I guess in both Golden Sun games, there is a LOT of dialogue, making it hard to save at some points.
But everything else I really like: The combat, the characters, etc. Can't wait for Golden Sun 3 on the DS...
Oh god yes. I loved Golden Sun....... but all the dialogue was just.... bad. They told you the same thing over and over or it was useless information.

Uh, that's all I can think of right now.

My Favourite Game: FFX
My Criticisms: The advanced Sphere Grid is tricky for customization at the start because if you want to send person A down Person B's path, you have to move like ... 15 plaes just to get to the start of their's, when a proper costomize thing should give you like ... an automatic teleport on your first sphere grid attempt ... or something.

That's really my only criticism of the game.

Mass Effect 1 had a great story but really weak, shallow combat.
Mass Effect 2 did its best to pull the gameplay up to the level of the writing.

One of the changes they made was to institute an ammo system.

Guns in ME 1, you see, are only limited by heat. With the right talents, it becomes possible to fire pretty much infinitely with at-least-decent-at-most-pinpoint accuracy.

In ME 2, weapons shunt their heat into clips that fit any and all weapons in a manner that is almost exactly like firing bullets out of a normal, modern gun.
You discharge filled heat clips by smacking the side of your gun, sending white-hot slivers of undoubtedly radioactive metal careening out. This is called 'reloading' for some reason.

The game's attempts to explain this sudden and universal shift in tech it are just too laughably contrived for words, making it sound like technology has actually devolved in the years since ME 1... and yet the mechanic itself is a significant improvement for gameplay.

Shadow of The Colossus - The smallest of the Colossi where really irritating to fight
Silent Hill 2 - Some of the voice-acting is horendously bad.
Firstly, I you like Timesplitters we should hang out -
Shadow of The Colossus - The smallest of the Colossi where really irritating to fight
That's the only one I wanted to kill...

Hey Yorda stop looking at the birds, no the shadows aren't your friends. I don't think I'm doing it right

Burnout Paradise
The map cannot be changed from objective to subjective which alienates all my friends that liked GTAIV and means I have to do challenges with disruptive moron timewasters. Introduce a kick count with reasons for kicking so these idiots are weened out.

Any FPS without customisable controls
Lazy programmers. a=a or a=* (Do it for all the buttons) an amstrad could handle that. Maybe I don't want to use your exclusive controls

Oh, truer words have not been spoken.

"Do you want to hear what I said again?"

Cloud of FFVII is kind of an emo douchebag. There, I said it.

Still better than most of the main characters of Final Fantasy games.

Edit: Oh, sorry, I missed the "be tasteful" part. Eh, there's no tasteful way to say "emo douchebag."
Emotionally disturbed vaginal water might work.

OT: My favorite game is still Chrono Cross, but it can be a bit childish and silly at times. Also, there is very little need for 45 characters, though it does make playing interesting.

LoZ:OOT.

Water Temple.

That is all.

Or Okami, gets repeative at times and is too easy as you can just spam bones for health most of the time and most enemies are really easy.

FF7:
I'd say the game is too easy (ok some bosses may be a threat with first playthrough) and the fighting isn't really tactical in the end. Use summons as long as you can and then spout some spells until the enemy goes down. Square kicked the players in the balls by putting Materia Keeper as a boss right after you get Vincent.

The game has really cool characters and a nice humorous touch.

FFVIII offers next to no help for people who are new to games, when I first played it (it was not long after I first started getting into gaming) it took me a short while to figure out what to do.
And if you stop playing it for a while and then start again, like with other old/middle-gen Final Fantasies, you forget things and have no idea what you're supposed to be doing, no way to remind yourself.
It's too easy to miss drawable GFs in bosses. A little hint that it has a GF would be nice! :( I had to play back through the game to many times to get GFs I missed. Don't get me started on how many times I forgot to draw Siren and Carbuncle.
With most of the hidden bonuses on the game, there's no way at all of knowing they're there without googling it. There's no chance players would get Tonberry, Doomtrain, Bahamut or Eden unless they found out about them on the internet first. And there's a high chance people wouldn't get Odin in time to get Gilgamesh. Although, Odin > Gilgamesh. Apart from Gilgamesh one-hitting bosses, which is unlikely.

Too many criticizms. IT'S A GOOD GAME! STORY IS INCREDIBLE!

Oblivion
If I had to properly criticise it I'd say that in later levels fights take ages to complete at the standard medium difficulty; my main character is level 51 and standard encounters can sometimes take agonisingly long to defeat, especially if you go in with a damaged weapon, and if you're wearing light armour it's always down to like 50 by the end of it.
Bullshit level 51. Either that or you spent too much time playing that game.
Besides Oblivion had a miriad of shortcomings. First off the voice acting was - it sucked.
I don't think there were enough unique items with unique models/skins, the plot was...interesting. It didn't really hang well with the game, and it was really buggy. Really, it was. You got lucky. Oh, and the terrain wasn't particularly exciting.
Aaalright I guess I can agree with those criticisms. The voice ating especially can get to me at times. But Bullshit? Bladed weapons, armourer, light armour, sneak, acrobatics and security are major skills and at 100, with the last one being marksman at 70-something. I can take a video if you really want :S

Red Dead Redemption & GTA4: other than the uncanny valley effect, there are a lot of strange glitches that result in 'WTF' deaths and sometimes, game crashes. Both games are also littered with adamantium-laced poplar trees and cacti. The controls are also poor very poor: to properly hogtie somebody in RDR, one needs to hold both triggers [or marshmellow-buttons] then tap X or A hoping they are in the correct spot. Walking is also kind of hit-or-miss especially in areas with questionable footing like, on cliff sides or fire escapes. Why can't Niko simply climb down the side of a building and drop onto the fire escape then, drop down from the bottom-most part of said fire escape!?

Just Cause 2: Two words: Invisible soldiers. You walk into a small town, pick up some items and lay a bomb by a generator...then it explodes because you mistook the triggered ones for the fragmentation. You turn around and see a firing squad of 8 enemy soldiers blasting away at your dumb ass with combat shotties and, full-on machine guns.

Resident Evil 5: Not a survival horror game.

Batman: Arkham Asylum: Too short. The ending also offers no closure.

Mass Effect 2 has an end. Also, it has the most overrated character in the history of gaming - Tali.

teamfortress 2

Heavy's are over powered and can kill anybody in about 2 hits.
Hat's are only easy to get through crafting, which is impossible unless you play ALOT and get unlockable weapons 24/7.
My favourite class, the Pyro is becoming more and more underpowered with each update.
(it's still a great game though! :D )
