Let me walk you through how I experienced it on the PC.
So it started when I downloaded the demo, which took 2 days. Start it up, watched a "training video". Ok, whatever, I guess it could be helpful to someone who's just starting to play on the PC for the first time ever.
Then it tells me to "press 'start' to begin". It actually means "Enter". Which I found out after repeatedly mashing the button between the Ctrl and Alt key and getting nowhere. Well, thats a promising start(this sentence is sarcasm).
I then am told to sign into my Gamespy account. Alri- wait, Gamespy account? Who the fuck still uses Gamespy as their online service? I thought we stopped using it because it sucked giant donkey-balls. There is no reason in this day and age to still use this poor excuse for an online service. Also, I can't remember my password. Oh wait, I wrote it down somewhere. After some searching, I found it, and proceeded to enter my username and password. Apparently I entered the wrong one. Ok, I guess I may have wrote down the wrong one for some stupid reason. Its cool, we all make mistakes.
So I click on "forgot password". It then brings me to the Crysis 2 website, with nowhere to retrieve my Gamespy password from. How is this supposed to help Crytek? Normally when I click "forgot password" in other games, it brings up a place for me to type my email, then you can email it to me. Apparently thats too simple for you, because you want me to apparently go to the Crysis 2 sight, which has no links to Gamespy anywhere, to get my Gamespy password. What the fuck?!
Alright, fuck this then. I'll try the Steam version. Normally I'd like to limit what I have on Steam, but fuck at least with Steam I won't have to deal with Gamespy.
So 2 days later the Steam version is downloaded. I start it up, skip the damn video that got old the first time, and am told to enter my Gamespy name and password.
Ok, Crytek, seriously, WHAT THE FUCK?! Why the fuck are you making me use Gamespy when I have the Steam version?! What train of logic did you take to think this would be a good idea?! Steam has its own shit, let it use it if your going to put the game on Steam. Its one reason to use Steam, convenience, and yet you insist on using fucking horrible-ass Gamespy to play online. Holy shit this is just stupid. God dammit.
So after much time and research, and re-logging into a long-dead yahoo email account, I managed to fish through the thousands of spam emails and found my long-lost gamespy password. I enter it in, and it works.
Alright, time to see what this game has. I check the options to set my graphics, since Crysis does have a reputation of being quite the graphics whore. I expect there to be many many options with which to customize my experience so I can get some quality but have the game actually run.
So I go into graphics, and... there's nothing. Just set the resolution, brightness, and "graphics settings" which consist of 3, count 'em 3, options. "Gamer", "Advanced", and "Hardcore", these are the graphics options I have at my disposal. The only fucking options I have. Which is high? Which is low? Which is medium? It doesn't say. At all, anywhere. Really Crytek? Really? I don't even have words for this.
Alright god dammit, lets just fucking learn as we go. I'll start with "gamer" and switch up the graphics in-between matches and use the performance difference to judge which is which.
-Side Note: There is a friends list function. If you think I mean Crysis 2 on Steam uses Steam's integrated friends list, you'd be wrong. It uses Gamespy's friend list. So you have to re-add all your friends by using their Gamespy name. Yes I am aware of how stupid this is. Apparently Crytek isn't.
Ok, so lets join a match. Oh, dedicated servers, nice. This I like. Although it seems the cap is only 12 people, which is odd considering Crysis 1 had up to 32 people who could play at once. Whatever though, Crysis 1's multiplayer sucked. So I pick a modes US East Coast server with 8 people and get into a match. Performance wise, its pretty smooth. Very nice, although further testing is needed to see how it stacks up.
Gameplay-wise, its Call of Duty. Really Crytek? Instead of trying something interesting with the nano-suit your just going to make another damn Call of Duty clone? You know, the nanosuit doesn't seem so "advanced" when one god damn punch to the stomach can kill you. Also, feature wise, the nanosuit is reduced to a sad shell of its former self. Instead of selecting each mode separately through a radial menu, like in Crysis 1, the modes are now just woven into the gameplay. Which sounds good, until you play it, and see it doesn't really add anything new other then the ability to cloak at will, jump high, and turn into a canonball mid-air and crush anyone under you(which, admittedly, is pretty sweet). Super-speed is the worse affected though. Going from practically speed-hacking in the first game to a simple "sprint" which is just as fast as any sprint in any other game, and is just as fast as standard, non-speed enhanced sprint in Crysis 1. But you can see your feet. Which is totally sweet, more games should do that(I'm being completely serious here).
Crysis 2 even has killstreaks. Radar, Airstrike, and Chopper. Wow Crytek, your not even trying to be different, are you?
Well as I was playing, I realized something peculiar, it was like some force was pulling on my reticle. Well I check the options, and sure enough, there is auto-aim in this thing. Auto-aim, in a PC game. Really Crytek? Really? Wow, I don't even know what to say.
Well after disabling it and finding my aim to improve, I manage to complete the game and went 15-7. A pretty nice score if I do say so myself. I even rank up twice. So I set the graphics to "advanced" and the match starts. 2 minutes later, it says I disconnected. Alright, fair enough, my internet isn't the greatest. I'll just join another game.
37 fucking times I tried to join matches. On 37 different fucking servers. Each one it disconnected me from the lobby. Normally I would blame this on my internet, but when I'm the only one on, and nothing is downloading, I think the issue is with the shitty demo and not my connection. At this point, I feel as though Crytek is now just trolling me. So I quit, and uninstall.
So in conclusion, fuck this demo. It sucks, its just a Call of Duty clone, and it has very, very little originality. Which is baffling considering the multiplayer is made by Crytek UK. For those who don't know, Crytek UK was Free Radical, and they made the best games ever, Timesplitters. You'd think that some of their interesting stuff would get into the game. Like, oh I don't know, challenges that utilize the suits abilities. Like a Nanosuit race, platforming challenges, platforming races, a contest with the strength feature to see how far you can throw enemies, obstacle courses... you know, things that are interesting. But no, apparently thats to interesting for Crytek/EA, who just seem to want another Call of Duty game.
So, in closing, fuck you EA. And fuck you Crytek.
