Crysis, Why The Hate?

I've noticed since Crysis' release it's had alot of god-awful stick.
Sure the AI isn't to clever and the story and all that stuff is pretty iffy but wasn't Crysis solely made for the graphics?

Overall the gameplay isn't THAT bad is it? I find the online play really good bar for the hackers, i think it comes across as one of the more strategic shooters of actually planning your assault and moving in as a squad. Some of the gadgets are pretty nifty too like the mines and radar scanners, you can sit by a roadside and set up little blockades and stuff it's really quite fun.

What are your opinions? Etc etc..

I actually quite like the gameplay of Crysis. I thought it was a great game - and I could only run it on the minimum settings, so this is from someone who is judging it on story and gameplay alone.

I think most of the Crysis hate is just hype backlash. Crysis was a decent enough FPS - I'd give it an 8 - but it's not the 10 rated orgasm that many gaming mags and review sites made it out to be. Too much priority was put on the new graphics engine, which is supposedly the very first to really make good use of DirectX 10 features. Thus, for many reviewers, it was the dawn of a brave new PC gaming world. They were probably hoping the players would believe so too, instead of abandoning the platform en-masse as has been the trend.

I agree, i must emphasise the online play though, i've been playing it alot recently (as i just updated my computer so im stretching it out on Crysis high) and i'm realy enjoying it, i've never seen an FPS that offers so much variety on the larger maps.

Crysis is a Halo-esque piece of crap, a trip to Yawnsville replete with regenerating shields and enemy-detecting radar, that gives you enemies with 2' thick invisible aerospace alloy helmets.

There's minimal 'moving as a squad', it's more 'infiltrate and shoots them!'. There's a serious lack of choice/diversity in weaponry, and mystifyingly, your fucking pistols are more accurate and powerful than an assault rifle. Atop that, there's barely any reward to careful aim - there's no point to a headshot when your enemy can take 10 rounds in the face without flinching. Objectives are uninteresting, and the vaunted 'open-ended gameplay' comes down to 'sneak past, snipe them, or go in guns-ablazing with your pistols or a vehicle'. Your suit extras are pretty much pointless aside from camouflage, which completely eliminates the need for any effort towards stealth. Spotted? Woop, just dash into another room and go invisible, then blow them away while they run around saying 'WHERE HE GO!'.

It's a variety box of donuts that looks good, until you bite in and realize that you just bought 36 of those donuts that taste like they were made with cake mix. Two of those 36 are tasty, but other than that, it's practically a chore to eat through the pack.

I'd have rated it at 60% or so, not the 'Game of the year!' 94% horseshit that everyone spews like rancid projectile vomit. It was so goddamn lame and mediocre that I was too pissed off to go 'Wow, look at those graphics!'.

your really starting to nag, and copy many things many independent reviewers say. you seem to not even like fps games because that can be said about most generic fps titles.
to quote a person i forgot "next time you have a thought, let it go."

Crysis was great. Only on Delta mode, though. As soon as you can hear what the Koreans are saying, and as soon as you don't die when somebody shoots you five times, it becomes less interesting. I started it on some other mode, challenging I think, and didn't like it as much.

@Saevus. Even on Delta mode, enemies die with a single shot from any gun to the head. Except those big guys with nanosuits and miniguns and gauss rifles. They take like two shots from a sniper rifle to the head. God they're annoying. And the enemies spot you fairly well when you're invisible on higher difficulties. Within about 8 feet, and they start to notice you. They can also hear you. The only ridiculous thing about the AI I found was that when you shot a gun with a silencer, they'd turn around to where the bullet hit, instead of looking at you, which made sense, until you shot 5 more times, and he kept looking at the rock (full of bulletholes) like it was going to eat him.

Some of the scenes in Crysis, like where you jump on top of a building and knock the roof down on your enemies, or shoot out a tire or shoot the gas tank of an enemy vehicle with a sniper, or pick up one of your enemies and throw him into the other enemy, while simultaneously filling a third enemy full of holes, just make you feel like a complete badass. It's an experience I haven't seen replicated in any other game. There were flaws, obviously, but I thought the meta score it got, of 92 I believe, was a fair rating by the gameplay it offered. Just make sure the Koreans speak Korean.

The only thing i like about crysis is the fact they made the AI a lil dumber. As a funny man once said "farcrys enemys can see you 90,000 yards away behind a bush" that is a bit of an over statement, but still true.

I found Crysis to be very enjoyable, not to mention an amazing piece of eye candy that makes my PS3 weep. The gameplay was quite good, the AI is better then most generic shooters, and the weapons customization was a good attempt at varying up the guns without adding in some other, unnecessary weapons at the same time. Overall, I enjoyed it alot. Perhaps not the 'mind blowing' reviews worth of enjoyment, but still $40 well spent.

I think people are just bitter that most computers can't run it. So when they do get around to playing it all its problems are made biger.

That said I've never played it so this is only a guess.

From a precision rifle, or pistols. I've seen 3 direct hits to the head from the AK shrugged off like nothing; it works far better to just cloak, stealth in, and gaily lift them off their feet with buckshot. I was expecting something that'd reward a player for finding a good vantage and laying down, snapping on a scope, setting the rifle to semi and running some hot double-tap action. Now, of course, if you could've scoped your pistols...

Fluffy, I love certain FPS. S.T.A.L.K.E.R., for example; I played it for literally months. I could nag fucking endless about it, but do you know why it isn't a piece of shit like Crysis? Because it does some really awesome things to make up for where it falls short. I don't exactly care if I'm saying what other 'independent reviewers' are saying, I'm saying this as a consumer of a game that someone I live with was stupid enough to buy.

Crysis looks shiny. Too bad every other high-budget game does too. I don't care if something looks like System Shock 2 or the next-generation cutting-edge visual messiah - if the gameplay is crap, nothing makes up for it. Except plot, sometimes. Which Crysis quite obviously did not have.

P.S. Played it on a computer that ran it glass smooth on medium-high graphics and I was underwhelmed, after everything I'd heard about it.

Frankly, the way it was hyped, I think it was the Halo of PC games: a fine game by itself, but not the awesomeness that was promised. Also, the way the developer (and several fans) went on, the way they sold the game purely because of the graphics, that really put me off. I can take a developer saying they made a pretty game, but the minute the selling point of the game is the graphics, I immediately avoid the game. Give me story/gameplay any day.

Any highly hyped game gets horrible backlash, just look at Halo. Or Too Human (that's not even out yet and I could fry bacon on the flames).

The impressionable idiots that people are they believe the hype and keep expecting these games to be "BEST GAME EVAR!!!!!!!!!!!111." These are often good games, excellent even. But definitly not the best.

Then there's fanboy-type haters who'll flame because they can't have it or to belittle their "opponents" and the cynic-haters who don't like anything except the rare title that strikes just the right chord enough times.

Thats why.

I haven't played it, but I know it takes nigh unassailable requirnments for you computer. If it was made for graphics and such, then that would be why it's bad, except for dumb teenagers who argue with each other that Call of Duty 4 is "totally gay" and GTA4 "kicks its' ass" because the graphics in COD4 "suck dick compared to GTA4".

Who in their right mind would say that? CoD4 is almost photorealistic while GTA4 almost looks last-gen except for the cars.

The cars don't even have a place to put in gas.

Because Crysis represents the pinnacle of dumb gaming decisions. i.e. hugely resource hogging with little thought given to design, art, music and storyline. It's the wrong direction for the industry to take and I'm glad a lot of people could see that too.

I play it on my MacPro with all settings High or psuedo-"Very High" (by cheating the DX9-10 bullshit).

It's fucking beautiful, prettiest open-world game i've ever seen, and prettiest up-close-details as well. The engine is a masterpiece.

The game wasn't bad, i could call it the unofficial Halo 3, ie: it basically plays the same, but looks better.
