That being said, I find the lack of graphics sliders and options in Crysis 2 disapointing. One of the reasons I play PC games is because I can tweak games to my particular wants. Having to add commands to the .exe just to disable motion blur is... well... ghetto.
Agreed, it's less about DX11 than about acknowledging the problem. Simply brushing off people will make them hunt harder. Notch/Toady/Gabe/Schafer/Pitchford all know the simple trick of waving shinies in front of the crowd to distract them. Kotick/Riccitiello/Cry-Tek still think that carpet-banbombs are the best way for customer service.

DX11 support is growing rapidly.

Also, DX9 now only makes up about 45% of the market. Some games aren't going to even support DX9 anymore.

Additionally, MANY current games support DX11.

Most disappointing PC launch evar!

And Crysis 2 suddenly disappears from the list of games on wikipedia that support DX 11. Wish I could have checked their refernce for the claim. Along with Nvidia having to backtrack, this really has been an embarrassing piece of mis-information.

More to the point, I have yet to see ANY game take advantage of DX11 effects.
Erm, Metro 2033, DA2, stalker all support tessellation which is definitely a major DX11 effect. And those are just of the top of my head. You have not looked very hard.

Eh. Appealing to a potential demographic is far less appealing to companies than appealing to one that definitely exists. The fact is the vast majority of PC users have mid-range-at-best hardware and want games optimized for mid range machines. Despite Crysis' reputation for being tech heavy the truly hardcore graphics-uber-alles gamer made up a far smaller proportion of sales than most people seem to think.

It doesn't go that way... both graphics features and hardware had a symbiotic relationship in the past. Why would a lot of people buy DX11 cards if there are no games making use of them and they can still play everything on Very High/Max anyway (other than their old cards being out of warranty/stop working like in my case)? It's like expecting people to buy a HDTV when every single TV station out there is still transmitting in SD... what's the point?
You're assuming Crytek has a stake in selling hardware, which they don't. The constantly escalating hardware demands of PC gaming are an oft cited reason for Core PC gaming's lesser market share and I can see why Crytek doesn't want Crysis 2 to be the posterboy for excessive hardware requirements like the original game was.

That being said you are right about how they've handled the situation. It's been pretty atrocious thus far.

Well since nvidia gives them money for to develop games optimized for Nvidia and all cards from the gtx 400+ supports dx11 and has that as a selling point you could argue they get money from nvidia so people will buy shiny new stuff so they can play a shiny new game

That's a solid point. And it does make me reconsider why Crytek shipped the game without DX11.

Perhaps Nvidia's stance has shifted from "get them to buy our latest card" to simply ensuring a (shiftily) guaranteed performance increased over ATI products.

Perhaps.. and I do think its quite brave of crytek to say this will not be a console port and then not ship with dx11... Im sure if they had shipped with dx11 it would have given them a even better reputation ( at least from pc players)

I'm surprised it wasn't supported at launch. Which I believe is just stupid, especially when you hype up developing for the PC and all that.
I really wish I could judge on how well they developed this game for the PC, sadly I'm still stuck on the startup screen, I just can't seem to find the darn start key...
It should be right between the "Ctrl" and "Alt" key. Some keyboards replace it with the Windows Logo though. But it doesn't matter, pressing it doesn't seem to do anything.
You didn't get it, did you?
I didn't. I've never been asked to press start.
Obviously you need to adjust your T.V. then.
Pc version! Ouch!

Actually I'm starting to wonder if that's all part of a viral marketing strategy. I mean, they obviously knew how much they'd piss the PC-nerds off with the "start"- and TV-thing, not to mention the fact that they don't use any of the stuff those guys paid hundreds of bucks for (tesselation and...well...tesselation)...

So why do that? Either they genuinely don't care about the PC market anymore, but then why release a PC version after all?

Or they wanted to create buzz. And hell what an amount of buzz they created!

Well played, EA :)

We'll see how it worked in the sales-figures...
